over
Spain,
Italy,

France:
It

putinto

SpanishPlay

it,

But
if
'the
Character
of
the
Libertine
[is]
borrow'd
all
the
Plot,
till
thelatter
end
of
theFourth
Act,
is

With
Act
V,
however,
theplot
reverts
to
the
traditional
legend
and
final
catastrophe:
'It
Thunders
andLightens,
Devils
descend
andsink
with
Don
John,
who
is
cover'd
with
a
Clowd
of
fire'.
The
play
was
well
received
in
1676,
with
Betterton
as
Don
John.
Its
success
ledto
Shadwell
's
remark
that
it
was
his
'good
Fortune'
to
have
pleased
the
town
'withso
littlepains:
therebeing
noAct
in
it,
which
cost
me
above
fivedayswriting;
andthe
last
two,
(the
Play-house
having
great
occasion
for
a
Play)
were
both
written
in
four
days'.
