Baby steps Nandhini. Talking to Nandhini JS is like catching up with your erstwhile neighbour after 10 years you hit the comfort zone in exactly two seconds. And, if that is any indication of how her directorial first Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru (TTTT)is going to be, youll identify with the film, as it revolves around characters you meet every day. But, how did a middle class girl with no film background get here in the first place? With a lot of convincing eight months, to be precise, she giggles. My parents freaked out when I told them film direction was my calling. Even as a school kid, I was into arts, and making people act, sing and dance not knowing I was actually directing! I realised I was the happiest doing this. Finally, my folks gave in, and after completing my BBA, I took up a threeyear course in direction at Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu (FTIT). Armed with a gold medal from FTIT, two State awards for her short film Ottam, and experience as associate director for Priya V. in Kanda Naal Mudhal, Nandhini approached producers, with complex subjects. However, apprehensive as they were with her relative inexperience and no big names behind, she decided to go for a light-hearted script. And, TTTT, a romcom, was born in March 2007.

A still from the film. It is the story of two friends a boy and a girl coming together to help someone and landing in trouble. While the boy is a lazy slob, irresponsible and laidback, the girl is a cleanliness-freak, punctual and talks nineteen to the dozen in short, they cant stand each other! Eventually, love happens. But that itself is only the sub text, the second layer in the film, so much so you can hardly put a finger to the exact moment when love blooms, she says of the film, produced by Sathyam C inemas and Real Image Media Technologies, and shot in Red One camera in digital format. Nandhini says she was very sure she wanted only new comers to play the lead. I did not want stars to take over the story, because my story is the protagonist. Ajmal, two films old in Tamil, fits the bill as the peppy chocolate boy, and Rupa Manjari from Bangalore as your girl-next-door. And, whats with the title? It kind of sums up the lead characters the thiru thiru boy and the thuru thuru girl, she laughs. As a woman director was it not a natural choice to do a woman-centric film, following the likes of Suhasini (Indira) and Revathy (Mitr, my friend)? But, why must I be slotted? I am not for women or against men. All I want is to be a director. And, the two valuable lessons Nandhini learnt as a director: that film making is not about craft or technology but handling people, and that happiness is not in tomorrow; its in today. W.
