Ram Mohan

Indian animator

Ram Mohan (26 August 1931 – 11 October 2019) was an Indian animator, title designer and
design educator, who was also known as father of Indian Animation and was a veteran in the
Indian animation industry, who started his career at the Cartoon Films Unit, Films Division of
India, Government of India in 1956. He was chairman and chief creative officer at Graphiti
Multimedia, a Mumbai-based animation company which was established in 1995, and later he
also established the Graphiti School of Animation in 2006.

He had won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Animation Film twice, You Said It
(1972) and Fire Games (1983). He was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the 2006
Mumbai International Film Festival and was awarded the Padma Shri the fourth-highest civilian
award given by Government of India in 2014.

Early life and education


Graduated in Chemistry from the University of Madras and later moved to Mumbai for his
post-graduate studies but gave it up to join the Cartoon Films Unit, Films Division, Government
of India in 1956. He received training in animation techniques from Clair Weeks of Walt Disney
Studios, under the US Technical Aid program. Weeks was at the time serving a two-year stint as
the head of the Cartoon Films Unit. Another important person to join at the same time was
Bhimsain Khurana, who also became a notable animator (Ek Anek Aur Ekta).

1974– He was commissioned to script, design and direct a series of educational films on
population and environment, "Down to Earth" for the International Planned Parenthood

1996– Communication Arts Guild Hall of Frame award for Life Time achievement. Series
director:“Meena” for UNICEF, a series of 13 episodes dealing with issues concerning the girl
child in south Asia.
2001– Advertising Club Award 'ABBY' for Life Time Achievement.
2003– I.D.P.A. 'Ezra Mir' award for Life-Time Achievement. Broadcast India
2014 – Padma Shri, India's 4th highest civilian award by Govt. of India.

2. Kireet Khurana

Kireet Khurana (born 25 October 1967) is an Indian filmmaker, storyteller, and ad-film director.

He has made short films and ad films. He is the director of India's first film combining live-action
and 3D animation called Toonpur Ka Superrhero, starring Ajay Devgan and Kajol. His 2018
feature film T for Taj Mahal, produced by Abis Rizvi, screened at the London Indian Film
Festival. It won the Best Feature Film Audience Award and Best Story Award at the DC South
Asian Film Festival. His 2016 documentary on Indian film director Saeed Akhtar Mirza, entitled
Saeed Mirza: The Leftist Sufi, released on Netflix in 2017. It was named among the top 10
documentaries of 2017 by Vogue India and The Hindu.

He is also the creator of India's largest animation series, Vartmaan, with animation pioneer
Bhimsain.

His exposure to animation films started from age six due his father, Bhimsain. Kireet attended
the Jamnabai Narsee School and later completed a BA with a major in economics from the
University of Mumbai. Soon thereafter, he went on to graduate in 1994 from Sheridan College,
Canada, with honors, in animation filmmaking.

Trade is a film on child prostitution. It was the first Indo-Canadian animation co-production with
the National Film Board of Canada and UNICEF It also won the National Award for Best
Animation Film Direction in 1998.

3. Geethanajali Rao
Gitanjali Rao (born 1972) is an Indian theatre actress, animator and film maker.

Biography and career


Gitanjali graduated as an applied artist from Sir. J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, in 1994. Two
animated short films independently produced and directed by her, Orange and 'Printed Rainbow'. Her
debut animation short Printed Rainbow (2006) had won the Kodak Short Film Award, Small Golden Rail
and the Young Critics Award at Critics Week section at Cannes in 2006. The film has also won the Golden
Conch for Best Animation Film in the 2006 Mumbai International Film Festival.

She has served in the judge's panel at various festivals including the 2011 Cannes Critic's Week short
films jury. In 2013, she directed a segment in Shorts, a compilation of five short films, along with Neeraj
Ghaywan, Vasan Bala, Anubhuti Kashyap and Shlok Sharma, and produced by Anurag Kashyap.

At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, her animated short, True Love Story was one of 10 selected short films
at Critics' Week. Her latest animated feature Bombay Rose (2019) was one of the International Critics
Choice screenings at Poff film festival in Tallinn and was also screened at the Venice International Film
Critics Week 2019.

4.Ishu Patel

Ishu Patel is an animation film director/producer and educator. During his twenty-five years at
the National Film Board of Canada he developed animation techniques and styles to support his
themes and vision. Since then he has produced animated spots for television and has been
teaching internationally.

Background and Studies


Ishu Patel was born on April 20, 1942 in the State of Gujarat, India.

He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from M.S.University of Baroda, Gujarat, following which
he was accepted into the first cohort of faculty trainees hired at the newly formed National
Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

This was an exceptional design school created by the Government of India under the auspices
of Mrs. Gandhi and the influential industrialist family of Gautam and Gira Sarabhai. The school
was based upon the recommendations and philosophy of the American industrial designers Ray
and Charles Eames, as found in The India Report.

Through a Ford Foundation Grant provided to the National Institute of Design, Ishu Patel was
able to finish his post graduate studies in Graphic Design under Armin Hoffman at the
Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland, and returned to the National Institute of
Design where he taught and became Head of Visual Communications.

5 Rajiv chilaka
Director and cartoon animator

Rajiv Chilaka also known as Rajiv Chilakalapudi and Sitarama Rajiv Chilakalapudi is the
founder and CEO of Hyderabad-based Green Gold Animations and the creator of a few
cartoons including Krishna cartoon series and Chhota Bheem which has now been made into
an animated series and films. For his work in presenting cartoons at affordable price, Chilika
was conferred with an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the Academy of Art University,
San Francisco in 2016. He was the recipient of the 2013 School of Computing and Engineering
Alumni Achievement Award at the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

Early life
Chilaka went to Hyderabad Public School (The Hyderabad Public School,
Ramanthapur).[citation needed] He received his BE in Electronics and Telecommunications
engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad in 1995 and went on to the University of
Missouri - Kansas City for his master's degree in Computer Science.

Career
He started working as a software engineer in Kansas City for three years, but in 2000 he
switched courses to study animation at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. He has
an elder brother, Srinivas Chilaka, who helps him in running Greengold. Chilaka is the youngest
son of noted technocrat Madhusudan Rao Chilaka and Ms. Chilaka.

(born 1970) is an Indian animator who works for DreamWorks Animation. Rangaraju was part of the
team for movie Shrek that won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 74th Academy
Awards in Los Angeles, United States and BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 55th British
Academy Film Awards in London, United Kingdom, for which she was credited as Lighting Technical
Director.

7. Manick sorcar

Manick Sorcar (formal name Prafulla Chandra "P.C." Sorcar) is an Indian American artist,
animator, engineer, and laserist. Sorcar is an artist in various media, including fine arts,
cartoons, animations, laser arts, and world-touring stage shows with live action mixed with laser
animation. His animated films, all based on children's stories from India, have won prestigious
awards at international film festivals and been broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service for
25 consecutive years. His laser arts and animation in various forms have won global awards
from the International Laser Display Association.

university as a special application of lighting for degrees in illumination engineering.
On November 6, 2013, at Aalen, Germany, he was bestowed with the Special Achievement
Award for Cultural Enlightenment from the International Laser Display Association for
exceptional merit in using laser display to celebrate India's heritage, and to prepare the next
generation by introducing a course on laser art and animation and establishing the Manick
Sorcar Laser Animation Laboratory at Jadavpur University.
8. Charuvi agrwal

Charuvi Agrawal (born 20 June 1983) is an Indian painter, sculptor, animator, filmmaker, and
visual artist. She graduated from Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning,
Canada, and is a gold medalist in fine arts from the College of Art, University of Delhi.
Charuvi Agrawal is an avant-garde multi-media artist best known for technological enabled large
scale physical artworks, animated short films, TV shows and immersive experiences (VR/AR).
Her films have been screened at various film festivals while her artwork has been displayed at
various public forums besides being in homes of discerning collectors in India. Her work
routinely tests the boundaries of interactive technology, design and art employing elements of
Indian mythology to present transformational and immersive storytelling. Her "26,000 Bells of
light", a travelling exhibition includes a 25 feet interactive bell installation, numerous mythology
inspired figurines, paintings, augmented reality installation, and a hand painted Kavad which
has been showcased in various Indian metros. In 2016, her people's revolution zoetrope was
placed at the Lucknow JP Museum as a permanent artifact besides being commissioned to
make more for other public forum.

Agrawal was born in 1983 in New Delhi. She trained in fine art at the College of Art in Delhi
where she won a gold medal, and followed it up with a graduation in computer animation from
Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Canada. A multi talented artist she
paints, sculpts, designs, works in animation and films.

Her most notable work is her animated short film Shri Hanuman Chalisa and Bell Sculpture of
Shri Hanuman of 26,000 Bells.

Shubhavi Arya was born in New Delhi, India. Shubhavi's father, Jaibir Singh Arya, is an
Indian Administrative Service Officer and her mother, Minakshi Arya, is a veterinary
surgeon, both of whom work in the Government of India. Her mother, Minakshi Arya,
also holds an MBA and M.S. in Software Engineering from North Dakota State
University. She has one younger brother, Saatvik Arya.

10. Alori Jovi

Prateek Mathur, also known as Alroy Jovi (born in 1987) is an Indian animator, visual
effects supervisor, CGI/VR project manager, and director working primarily in digital

Sindhuja Rajaraman
Sindhuja Rajamaran (Tamil: சிந்துஜா ராஜமாறன்) became India's youngest CEO
and 2D animator at the age of 14. She is reported to hold a Guinness World Record for
becoming the youngest CEO in India of a Chennai-based animation company called
Seppan, which was founded in 2010 and had ten employees in 2014.

13.Shilpa randhe
Shilpa Ranade (born 1966) is an Indian designer, animator, illustrator, filmmaker and
academician. She has been faculty at the Industrial Design Centre at IIT Bombay since
2001. She has directed animated short films for Channel 4, UK and her films have been
screened all over the world, winning accolades in some of the most prestigious film
festivals. The award-winning animation movie Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya was her
last full-length feature film which world premiered at the Toronto International Film
Festival. Her other films are Naja Goes to School and Mani's Dying.

Early life and education
As a child, she was deeply interested in drawing and art. Her parents encouraged her to
pursue a career in an area of her interest. After class 10, she decided to pursue applied
art and she went to Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art where she specialized in Illustration
and Video. She then decided to pursue visual communication at I.I.T. Bombay and in
1989, she graduated with Master in Design (Visual Communication) with a
specialization in Advanced Illustration and Video. To study animation formally, she

14.Binu Sasidharan

Indian film maker (born 1976)

Binu Sasidharan (born 17 November 1976) is an Indian film maker known for his work in the
Malayalam Film industry. He made his debut feature film Once Upon a Time (2013 film) which
is being touted as Malayalam’s first full-length animated feature film. Binu, has previously
directed on an animated version of film CID Moosa (CID Moosa 007 for home video) and more
recently he was the maker of Malayalam’s first animated stereoscopic 3D video film for home
theaters named Kuttichathan.

15.Bhimsan

Bhimsain (born Bhimsain Khurana; November 24, 1936 – April 17, 2018) was an Indian
film director, producer, screenwriter and animator. He is best known as the pioneer of
Indian animation, along with his mentor Ram Mohan. He was the recipient of 16
President's National Awards for his contributions to Indian cinema.

He is best known for directing the critically acclaimed Gharaonda (1977) starring Amol
Palekar and Zarina Wahab, and Dooriyaan (1979) starring Sharmila Tagore and Uttam
Kumar. He is also known for creating the animation short film Ek Anek Aur Ekta (1974)
which aired on Doordarshan in the 70s. Bhimsain has also directed India's largest
animation series Vartmaan (1994).

Early life
Born in Multan (now in Pakistan) in 1936, Bhimsain moved to Lucknow after the
partition. Belonging to family of artists, he gravitated to arts and music early, studying
fine arts and learning classical music at the Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts which
held him in good stead throughout his life. In 1961, Bhimsain moved to Mumbai after he
secured a job at the Films Division of India as background painter. It is here that he
learned the art and craft of animation filmmaking, under the mentorship of Ram Mohan.

Indian animation filmmaker and poet

Dhvani Desai is an Indian animation filmmaker and poet. She is best known for her
animated films Manpasand (the Perfect Match) and Chakravyuh (The Vicious Circle).

17.priya kuriyan

Priya Kuriyan is an Indian comic book writer, illustrator and animation filmmaker, based
in the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka. She is the author of the comic book Ammachi's
Glass, and the author of the picture book and children's adaptation of the writer Perumal
Murugan's acclaimed novel Poonachi. Kuriyan was the recipient of the Big Little Book
Award at the Mumbai Literature Festival in 2019.

Kuriyan graduated from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 2004 and began
her career as an illustrator for Tulika Books. Since then she has been the illustrator for
over 100 books and collaborated with a number of writers including Ruskin Bond, Manu
S. Pillai, Natasha Sharma, Meera Nair, Jerry Pinto and Radhika Chadha. She has also

on the life of the former prime minister Indira Gandhi. As an animation filmmaker,
Kuriyan directed educational animation films for the Children's Film Society, India and
episodes for the Indian edition of Sesame Street (Galli Galli Sim Sim).
