Film Review Nasir Jani Melawan Lembaga Puaka directed by Arian Md Zahari (2020)

The documentary entitled Nasir Jani Melawan Lembaga Puaka is a documentary under the

direction of Arian Md Zahari. This documentary tells about several events that happened in

Malaysia including 1992, Rockers Menangis, their hair was cut, it was done on television. The

dark events that occurred in the early 90s which shocked Malaysians at the same time had a

profound effect on Nasir Jani's work in the following years. The documentary 'Nasir Jani

Melawan Lembaga Puaka' tries to cover the journey of the cult filmmakers of this 'Kembara

Seniman Jalanan' in reflecting on the complex culture of censorship in Malaysia. The clash of

Mahathirism at the beginning of his reign until the authoritarian culture which is quite ironic.

This documentary also responds to the helpful perspective of young filmmakers Amanda Nell Eu

and Steven Sarathababu who struggle and dribble with the logic of censorship and what happens

behind it.

For those who don't know who Nasir Jani has been involved in the world of directing for

more than 30 years. He started his career as a director through commercials and documentaries.

Then he took a step forward by involving himself in film directing. Among the films under his

directing starring M Nasir and ROZANA CINTA 87 (1987). When his career was at its peak, he

decided to take a break from directing films and focus on behind-the-scenes work in advertising

and telemovies. During the 1990s, Nasir was heavily involved in directing telemovies for local

television broadcasts, including FUNFAIR, GIGOLO, TATOO, NAMAKU SHIMA and RUNTUH.

Among the touches of his famous work is the telemovie BARA (1989). BARA has received an

encouraging response and has been nominated for various awards such as Anugerah Seri

Angkasa 1989/1990, Best Drama Director, Best Screenplay, Best TV Drama, Best TV Male

Actor, Best TV Female Actress and Best New Actress. Most recently, Nasir Jani has been
involved in directing music videos and documentaries including the documentary Allahyarham

Tok Guru Nik Aziz - the spirit of the leader of Parti Islam Semalaysia (PAS) and a documentary

about the country's literary figure, Datuk A Samad Said. Nasir was chosen by Layar Sunan

production to direct the movie Tombiruo based on his experience and his vision of directing.

Tombiruo will be his 'come back' film after several years of rest from the director's chair.

Nasir Jani's Documentary Against Tribal Councils Unraveled An icon of the Malaysian

film industry recalls his experience fighting the country's restrictive and complex film censorship

system and this documentari is about short documentary filtering culture in Malaysia. Iconic

filmmaker Nasir Jani's experience of clashing with the "barber" in the film censorship system in

Malaysia is the focus of the new documentary film 'Nasir Jani Melawan Lembaga Puaka'

(NJMLP). As a result of the national film censorship system that has restricted Nasir Jani from

continuing his work as a Malaysian filmmaker, he has joined one of the platforms to give

freedom to all film directors in Malaysia to produce works without restrictions, which is a

platform of ( FFN ) freedom film or social film organization Malaysia. This FFN task is As

social filmmakers, our job is to draw attention to social issues and give voice to those who are

often ignored. They are like hospital janitors, indigenous people, children who cannot go to

school, family members of bandits sentenced to death, abandoned elderly people, and miserable

rice fields.

Next is FFN said them film aims to drive social change that is peaceful, graceful,

inclusive, and just. Unfortunately, these works cannot be played on television and shows under

the existing screening regime. Therefore, we have started active research and plan to change the

current filtering system to a better system. We meet and invite filmmakers, arts groups, NGOs,
government agencies and other publics to participate in this process to create a fair, inclusive and

community-minded censorship system.

In Nasir Jani's documentary Melawan tribal council, it also introduces two Malaysian

film directors whose work cannot be shown on television, namely Amanda Nell Eu who tries to

highlight the life of a 12-year-old girl who has just had her period. Amanda tried to tell about the

boy's daily routine and what he felt when he was menstruating at a young age for the first time.

Apart from that, it is about a film director, Steven Sarathababu, who tries to highlight the

transgender issue or the title of his story "Dua Dunia Untuk Aku” which is a man who lives in

two identities and has to find a solution for his life. two worlds for me which is a story that came

in his dream that shows a man abusing a person and in that it says "This world is for me, not for

you" and from there the title of the film was created. However, the two films directed by the two

directors involved have been blocked by the Malaysian film censors for damaging the country's

image as well as a film that could bring criticism among Malaysians.

New techniques in the world of video editing continue to be created to meet creative

demands in entertainment and information delivery. One of them is the technique of taking

pictures or videos with many cameras, or often referred to as multi camera editing. In essence,

this technique aims to synchronize a voice with the recording results from two or more cameras

in recording the same scene. For example in minute 14:28/23:25 that is, where the camera took a

recording of Nasir Jani who was explaining about the refugee boys from Vietnam who were

filming in Malaysia about a boy who was wearing a shirt during reheasal but when he started

shooting he was without a thread on his body.


Currently, multi-camera editing techniques are widely used, especially in television

editing. Of course, the work efficiency is higher when compared to using only one camera in

covering the scene. With many cameras, viewers can be given different points of view in

enjoying a scene, so that the level of saturation can be eliminated. This also gives editors a wide

range of photo and video options in creating a video composition.

In addition, camera angle is the basic technique of taking a camera including long shot or

wide shot, medium long shot or medium wide shot, medium shot, and close up shot. In this

documentary we can see many medium shots, long shots and wide shots are used and this

technique focuses on the subject with all his expressions and activities without any part of the

body being cut off. Usually taking a video for a long shot or wide shot is used for the beginning

of the video to give an initial impression. For example describing a place. For example in mintue

this documentary.
