App Monetization
Paid app downloads increased by 2% on both Android and iOS, the third consecutive month of increases for both platforms. On Android the lower $1.01 - $3.00 price range increased by 1.2%, while premium price points $9.01 and above increased by 0.7%. Trends on iOS mirrored those of Android. The $0.99 price point increased by 1.3%, while premium price points above $14.99 saw signicant growth from 0.3% to 0.7%.

App Search Analytics introduces a new methodology for category counting. Games are a much larger part of iOS trafc than measured with the old methodology. On Android, games and utilities took big hits in category share, while books saw a large uptick.

Spotify was launched to signicant fanfare in the US on July 14. Chomp observed a major spike in search trafc for the app around the launch, and trafc has since remained elevated by > 250%.

On Chomp, 8% of all Android Downloads were paid, a 2% increase over June. This quantity has increased for the third consecutive month. The increases were seen across lower and premium price points. At lower price points, the $1.01 - $2.00 and $2.01 - $3.00 price ranges, each increased 0.6%. At premium price points, the $9.01 - $10.00 and above $10.00 price ranges increased by 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively.

Developers offering paid iOS apps saw downloads increase by 2%, compared to June. The growth was primarily at the $0.99 price point, which increased 1.3%. Premium price points above $14.99 also saw signicant growth from 0.3% to 0.7%.

Games and utilities saw signicant downticks. Books saw a signicant uptick. Games decreased from 26.0 to 21.7% and utilities decreased from 15.7% to 11.5%. Books increased from 3.6% to 6.3%. Smaller categories such as news, healthcare & tness, sports, nance, and education, saw large gains as well.

Month over month, there was almost no category churn in iTunes categories. Productivity saw a slight downtick from 8.8% to 7.5%, and reference saw a slight downtick from 5.7% to 4.9%. Books saw a slight uptick from 1.5% to 2.0%

Using the new methodology yields drastically different results for iOS. Most games were, dual categorized as both games and entertainment. Using primary category only yields a much stronger representation for the games category. Utilities, lifestyle, and productivity all see large downticks, while social networking sees a slight uptick using the new methodology.
