The goal of anti-aging
IS TO GET AND KEEP YOU WELL & HEALTHY RIGHT UP TO THE INSTANT YOU DEPART THIS LIFE. THESE ADDED QUALITY YEARS ARE ONES YOU CAN USE TO DO & SEE ALL THE THINGS YOU VALUE MOST IN LIFE -- AND THEN AND ONLY THEN TO EXIT STAGE LEFT AT A RIPE OLD AGE ONE METHUSALEH WOULD ENVY!

Sound impossible?

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

Life expectancy is increasing in the developed world. But Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey believes it will soon extend dramatically to 1,000. Here, he explains why. Aging is a physical phenomenon happening to our bodies, so at some point in the future, as medicine becomes more and more powerful, we will inevitably be able to address aging just as effectively as we address many diseases today.

Aubrey de Grey: "The first person to live to 1,000 might be 60 already"

In the classic movie Sleeper (1973) Woody Allen as Miles Monroe goes into a hospital for minor surgery, dies on the operating table, is cryogenically frozen and then revived in the year 2123. After this future day Rip Van Winkle comes to himself the doctor in charge explains to him what has happened. Miles response? He adamantly refuses to believe what he has been told and concludes that the whole story is something concocted by his friends and the doctor is an actor hired by them as part of the ruse. The doctor then assures him that everything that is transpiring is real, his friends are all long dead, and he would be wise to prepare himself to start a new life. Woody refuses to believe what the MD is telling him and exclaims, "I had a health food store and all my friends ate brown rice. They can't be dead!"

=
As funny as Woodys characters denial of reality is, his comment on brown rice is priceless precisely because it carries to absurdity something very genuine. That is, there is within most of us an abiding hope that the multi-vitamins we chuck down and health foods we eat will somehow help us cheat death or at least hold the Grim Reaper at bay for years if not decades. Of course, most of us also realize deep down that relying on multi-vitamins and organic foods including brown rice for life extension is wella long shot at best and absurd at worst. After all, people have been doing this sort of thing for more than 4000 years and no evidence has surfaced yet to show that these health faddists live longer than other

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

folks. However for those of us who believe in the power of organic foods and supplements, maybe we do stay healthier longer than we would otherwise and enjoy a quality of life that is better than we would have known had we not eaten well and taken our multi-vitamins. The jury is still out on this but many of us believe this is at least the right direction for a prolonged and healthy lifespan! Of course, insight into the aging process and how to combat it has grown by leaps-and-bounds in years since Sleeper debuted. And with this the hope of staving off death and prolonging quality life has moved beyond the simplistic and sometimes (yes) comical pronouncements of health food faddists, wishful thinkers, mystics and (ahem) Hollywood playwrights. The most optimistic of all scientists is Aubrey de Grey who claims that we are close to having the ability to live to be 1000 because
of the SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) project he is working on to prevent and cure ageing.

The real problem of the older person is that the methods we have today to help rejuvenate and regenerate the myriad degenerating and increasingly dysfunctional tissues contained within each of our aging bodies is that we just dont know how to best invest our time and money to get the most effective regeneration possible. No one has yet been able to study and compare the various treatments that are offered by thousands of different types of health practitioners to tell us which of these are truly effective, safe and actually Reverse the Clock! After 40 years of practicing alternative, integrative and complementary medicine along with standard internal medicine, general practice and oncology, physician and stem cell expert Dr. David Steenblock has had most of the different types of health practitioners in his clinic to see what these professionals could offer his patients. He reports that they all have a place and purpose but in terms of true regeneration, he states,

..in terms of true regeneration, I have never seen any treatment more effective than stem cells and growth factors to Reverse the Clock! Dr. David Steenblock

To coin an old phrase, you cant get to where you want without knowing where you are! When it comes to anti-aging this means you need some idea of what shape you are in and how old your body actually is (Both being interrelated and interdependent.) The fact is your actual chronological age which may be considerably higher or lower than the number of birthday candles on your last birthday cake! A sixty year who is 40 pounds overweight, smokes and abuses alcohol may be in the same physical shape as the average 70 or 80 year old, while a fit and active 70 year old whose diet & lifestyle is healthy may be 60 or younger. There has been and continues to be an intellectual war between scientists who work in the laboratory, study and write scientific articles about their findings in cell cultures, genes, proteins, hormones, etc. and what aging does to these and what they have discovered that can reverse some of these molecular age related changes and the practicing physician who is really the person in charge of reversing the age related medical/physical problems that seem to accumulate with aging no matter what our diet or life style is or has been. Is it aging or pathology is the question that has been debated and in general the two are so intertwined that it is foolish to think of one without the other. For example the body needs active healthy stem cells AND growth factors to repair the damage that occurs in the body and all of its tissues on a daily basis. After age thirty (30) we start to have a decline in the amounts of growth factors and the viability and functionality of our bone marrow stem cells. IN THEORY IF WE CAN KEEP GROWTH FACTOR LEVELS AND STEM CELLS FUNCTIONING AT THEIR OPTIMUM LEVEL AS ARE THE CASE WITH 21-30 YEAR OLDS WE COULD WELL OUTLIVE THE LONGEST LIVED PERSON DOCUMENTED IN HISTORY. A thousand years of living without getting run over by a truck or visited by some other natural disaster is expecting too much but living to be a healthy 100 year old is now within our reach if we take care of ourselves by adopting good preventive lifestyles and then, as we develop various problems, fix them with the latest tricks that such as stem cells, growth factors and a host of other modern medical tools. One quick way you can determine your actual or real age is to use Dr. Ozs Real Age Calculator which can be accessed by clicking this link: http://www.realage.com/landing/entry4?cbr=GGLE10037X (Note: This calculator is geared for people over 40 years of age.) If you havent had a physical exam in more than two years get this done. Then have your doctor give his or her estimate of your biological age. Then take this number and add it to the one you came up with

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

on the Real Age Calculator and divide this by two. While this is by no means hard science, it will at least give you an idea of where you are age-wise. More important than your biological age is the condition of each of your vital organs. A diseased heart can put an immediate end to a person with a young biological age! Each of your organs is vital to your health and if you develop a problem involving one or more of these, the sooner you discover the cause and correct the problem the longer and healthier you will be. Centenarians are people who live to be over 100 years of age and the one thing that they all have in common is a lack of risk factors. That is to say they generally dont have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are not obese, eat healthy, exercise regularly, are not overly stressed out and generally have not been ill at all during their lifetimes. Thus the lack of repetitive physical damage is important to living for a long time in good health. On the flip side a study was conducted many years ago by a Belgium physician who moved to South Africa to work with the natives after finishing his medical training. What he found were people who were physically active but had no dental or medical care and so were constantly suffering from one infection or another from the time of their births. These indigenous people had a lifespan of 28-30 years of age the same lifespan of our Stone Age ancestors. After 10 years of studying these people his conclusion was that they died of the consequences of the damaging effects from these repetitive infections. Infections raise white blood cell counts especially the neutrophils and these neutrophils kill the invading micro-organisms by releasing enzymes such as elastase which destroys the bodys connective tissues. For example, pneumonia if untreated with antibiotics and allowed to run its natural course will either kill the person or leave a large area of destroyed lung tissue where the infection was. This destroyed tissue then is cumulative and as more infections occur the lungs functions are compromised and as a result the patient either slowly dies of lack of oxygen owed to the fact their lungs can no longer shuttle enough oxygen into the body to sustain it optimally or are killed by their next bout of pneumonia due to the fact their lungs have been weakened by prior infections. In other words it is the amount of white blood cells circulating in an individuals blood that is critical to long term health. A red meat eating person will have on the average 10,000 WBC/cubic mm while a strict vegetarian has a WBC count of half of that (5,000 WBC/cubic mm)! This is another good reason why everyones diet should include more organic vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and some fruits. Even this advice has to be taken with some caution though since there is a group of viruses that are pandemic among Westerners that are stimulated to grow and flourish in the body often without people even being aware of them. These are the Herpes group of viruses and include herpes simplex 1 and 2, Cytomegalovirus, EpsteinBarr virus, and Herpes zoster. Since these viruses use arginine (which is an essential amino acid and important in vascular health and growth hormone levels) to grow, when a person harbors any one of these viruses or has a combination of these viruses they will develop outbreaks of cold sores, or genital sores or become excessively fatigued and/or depressed. At times these infections involve the brain and the person can develop migraines, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons, meningitis and even die from these infections(Some of which they may not be aware they even have.) Dr. Steenblock has seen hundreds of patients who have never had their medical problems determined with respect to cause until he tested their blood to see if they had a chronic herpes virus. Though not

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

usually curable it can be put it into remission and keep it there as long as the patient knows what foods to avoid such as high arginine-containing nuts and seeds (that not only stimulates herpes viruses to grow and damage nerves and body but also stimulates the immune system which worsens rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune conditions, fibromyalgia, allergies, skin problems, Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimers, pulmonary fibrosis and any other condition that has inflammation as a component!) Another good example of these problems is illustrated by Parkinsons disease. Parkinsons patients have immune and detoxification problems compared to healthy people of the same age. They have exaggerated inflammatory responses to bacterial and fungal infections which may be due to the amounts of heavy metals like copper, iron, mercury and lead in their brain, intestinal tract and the rest of their body. These metals accumulate in these people for a variety of reasons some of which are from environmental exposures including excessive consumption of heavy-metals sequestering fish and in some genetic issues and problems that together facilitate increased absorption of these heavy metals as well as intestinal bacteria and their cell wall components. Endotoxins and Bacteria derived peptide (fMLP) have been found to be toxic to dopamine neurons and cause selective dopamine neuron loss at very low levels- the type of levels that can be produced from straining to pass stool, poor dental care and from consuming too many salted nuts and seeds, refined sugars, acid foods, alcohol and other intestinal tract damaging substances that allow these bacterial and fungal poisons to migrate through the intestinal wall into the blood stream. From the blood, these endotoxins and bacteria derived peptides are picked up from the blood by the astroglia that line the brains blood vessels and whose function (in part) includes protecting delicate neurons from these toxins. These poisons stimulate the blood-brain-barrier astroglia to make free radicals that cause damage to the nearby dopamine producing cells (and this by using up the free radical-scavenging glutathione normally present within astroglia that is needed to detoxify chemical poisons generated by internal metabolic processes or which enter the body from outside sources.)

If you have been a couch potato much of your life, smoked, boozed it up or have a chronic disease like diabetes (Type 2) or have had a stroke your actual or real chronological age is probably more than a few years more than your clock age. In this instance the immediate goal is to offset this damage and promote healing and restoration. This will help set the stage to push the biological clock backwards as you stop and hopefully repair these damaged tissues.

ANTI-AGING EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED TO REVERSE THE CLOCK

One medical issue that shows up very often in 30+ year olds is arterial calcification and atherosclerosis (blood vessel blockage.) Of course the percentages of people having these problems worsen the older

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

you are but occasionally you will see a young person even under 30 with the condition and sudden death may be the first sign of the problem! Diagnosing these before they become a personal tragedy is fairly straightforward (although often not tended to) though halting and reversing them is not. Dr. Steenblock recommends that everyone with a family history of heart disease have a quantitative Calcium Artery Score (CT scan) done beginning at the age of 30 and if clear then every 5 years thereafter. This particular test is the best and least expensive early warning test for coronary artery disease there is in Steenblocks opinion and not surprisingly he has been ordering them for his patients since 1990! When coronary artery calcification is found there is a very high probability the patient is heading for a heart attack sooner or later. The goal is to have a zero on this test meaning little or no calcium in coronary arteries as the more calcium seen on the scan of heart arteries the more atherosclerosis a parson has building up in his arteries and the more likely she will soon be having a heart attack, stroke or other vascular problems! When discovered by most conventional doctors they typically deal with these conditions by simply prescribing drugs like statins that tend to wind up doing more harm than good over time; Prescription pad medicine, in short. Physicians should take a different and more heads-on approach by fully identifying and directly dealing with the underlying disease processes and mechanisms. Arterial calcification can be due to over 240 different agents or mechanisms! Sifting through all of these causes can take a fair amount of effort by a physician and may require some work on the patients part to eliminate the underlying causes. For instance, calcium deposits on artery walls leads to them becoming stiff and hard which causes high blood pressure. Because the arteries no longer can expand optimally due to these calcium deposits the amount of red blood cells reaching vital organs from second-to-second is compromised which means a decrease in oxygenation of vital tissues. If this occurs to the brains blood vessels an individual starts to become forgetful, can no longer can do math in their head like they once could, start to forget home telephone numbers or addresses, etc. This sets them up for permanent dementia since arterial calcification and/or hypoxia is the direct cause of strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure, macular degeneration, arthritis, diabetes, etc.

Lack of oxygen likely causes or contributes to most all of the diseases associated with the aging process

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

Removal of calcium from arteries should be facilitated by taking more oral magnesium, intravenous EDTA chelation therapy, taking vitamin K-2 (Menaquinone-7) by mouth, use of parathyroid hormone injections (Forteo), lowering cholesterol, avoiding dairy products, eating lots more green and yellow vegetables. The fructose in fruits has been shown to accelerate the process of atherosclerosis so people need to limit fruit juices if possible and drink spring water, green tea or green vegetable juices. One thing people serious about antiaging should do is work with a physician to determine if sufficient oxygen is reaching their organs and tissues. While it is very difficult to accurately measure the levels of oxygen reaching each organ there is a simple noninvasive test called a nocturnal oximetry test that easily and readily reveals whether oxygen levels in the blood are falling off too much during sleep. This is actually a good way to access oxygen status as drastic drops during sleep due to sleep apnea or other medical conditions can damage the brain and other organs. If dramatic drops are noted the cause or causes is identified and then remedied or managed.

Nocturnal Oximetry Device

The machine that is used to do nocturnal oximetry testing is like a small tape recorder which is obtained from a physician and used at home. To use this device one puts a small non-painful clamp on a finger, turns the machine on and then goes to sleep. In the morning the clamp is removed and the machine is shut off and returned to the dispensing doctor. He or she will then prints out the sleep oxygen record, notes any problems and deals with this. If this test indicates poor oxygenation is occurring, Dr. Steenblock looks for causes or contributors such as obesity, alcohol intake, sleep apnea, strokes, transient ischemic attacks, etc. and then introduces therapeutic measures aimed at boosting oxygen flow. Sometimes this is as simple as losing excess weight while in others he prescribes a course of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT.) In HBOT a patient sits comfortably in a pressurized mini-submarine like chamber and breathes pure oxygen. The pressure in the chamber is typically set to approximate what is experienced at an ocean depth of about 33 feet. This drives oxygen into the body and saturates tissues and organs which not only counters hypoxia but also boosts the levels of antioxidant compounds such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione, etc. and appears to increase the rate of nerve regrowth (Nerve regrowth is a very desirable goal in patients with brain damage from a stroke or such or whose peripheral nerves have been damaged by diabetes.) Depending on the nature and extent of the arterial calcification and/or atherosclerosis that is present, Dr. Steenblock prescribes other treatments that will help the body reverse these. In some instances this involves chelation therapy to remove toxic, blood vessel wall damaging heavy metals from a patients body and use of External Counterpulsation (EECP), an FDA approved machine that increases blood flow to organs and tissues, and actually facilitates the growth of new blood vessels. The effects of EECP are often so dramatic as to produce what many doctors characterize as a natural bypass.

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

The External counter Pulsation machine is specifically used to increase blood flow to
the heart to treat angina (FDA approved for this) and congestive heart failure; to the lungs in those with emphysema; to the liver in liver failure cases; to the kidneys in instances of chronic kidney failure; to the eyes for macular degeneration and glaucoma; to the brain for strokes, Parkinsons, sleep apnea, Alzheimers, etc. and to legs and feet for the treatment of atherosclerosis, calcification and gangrene of the legs and feet.

Exercise, too, is helpful for many people with cardiovascular disease, but unfortunately some are not fit enough to handle intense physical exertion such as short-duration intense exercise. This type of exercise is the very best there is to release the stem cells from your bone marrow. The more stem cells circulating in your blood the healthier you are! One alternative to short-duration intense exercise is Periodic Acceleration Therapy (PAT). In PAT a person lies prone on a sophisticated mechanized

platform and gets a moderate cardiovascular work-out via a gentle back-and-forth motion. What this does is create a very mild stress on blood vessels that gets them busy producing Nitric Oxide (NO) and VEGF which confers all kinds of health benefits including facilitating better blood flow to organs and tissues body wide. NO also plays a role in the mobilization of a persons own stem cells from their bone marrow and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is felt to help the stem cells enter into the tissues while having the PAT where they can start to grow and make new tissues. Dr. Steenblock recommends this treatment be given daily and especially after a patient has had stem cells or has been given bone marrow stem cell releasing agents like Neupogen. Generally, Dr. Steenblock gives patients Neupogen on a daily basis (typically right after they arrive at his clinic) so that in 2-3 hours time their bone marrow has released large numbers of stem cells which then have a better chance to get to where desired and then to grow in those areas of the body that has been damaged or diseased. Of course, obvious arterial disease is not always present in those seeking to combat aging but excess calcium in ones arteries is always present in those of us who attain the age of 50. In general a 60 year old has 10 times more calcium in the walls of their arteries than a 10 year old has. Some studies are showing that 80 year olds have up to a 100 times more calcium in their arteries than 10 year olds! Some folks will have healthy serum cholesterol & glucose levels and arteries as clean as a whistle but have other chronic health conditions such as arthritis. As many chronic medical conditions involve oxidative stress or a compromised ability to deal with cell-damaging free radicals, Dr. Steenblock does tests to assess this. When an individuals body is not handling free radicals well or is overproducing them a therapeutic agent or treatment is prescribed to correct or offset this. In some instances this may be as simple as introducing an antioxidant-rich diet along with specific antioxidant supplements.

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

Another thing that Dr. Steenblock looks at is hormone levels. DHEA (5-Dehydroepiandrosterone), for instance, declines with age and is supplemented when its use is not contraindicated (which is the case in some people who have specific diseases or metabolic conditions.)

Stem cells are considered an important player in the anti-aging equation by Dr. Steenblock and many other doctors because both the creation of new tissue and repair of damaged and diseased tissue are dependent on stem cells that reside in the bodies various organs and tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells, in particular, are vital to the bodies repair and maintenance as these have the ability to become a wide range of cells such osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), adipocytes(fat cells) and neurons and their supporting glial cells. When this cache of stem cells is devitalized or hampered in carrying out their functions not only is healing compromised but the body itself may age prematurely. One of the major sources of stem cells in our bodies is bone marrow. Each of us, in fact, has in the hollows of our bones both red bone marrow tissue and yellow fat. When we are very young our bones are full of active healthy bone marrow that is growing and releasing healthy stem cells 24/7 year round. This is one reason why children can heal so much better than older people. But, as people get older their bodies make less new tissue especially that in the bones, and as a result there is a shift in the amount of red bone marrow to yellow bone marrow (which indicates there is fat present and no longer the same amount of stem cell producing red bone marrow). This loss of red bone marrow means there are fewer stem cells being manufactured so less are released into the circulation and there are not enough to go around to repair damaged tissues and to prevent the loss of tissue due to aging. Thankfully, Dr. Steenblock has figured out how to coax bone marrow to replace these senescent stem cells with healthy, vital ones. One way in which he does this is to treat patients with Intermittent Hypoxia Therapy which actually induces a temporary state of hypoxia or oxygen depletion in patients. This short-term, calculated, induced hypoxia stimulates bones to produce more stem cell rich bone marrow. This treatment is generally done in tandem with P.A.T. (Periodic Acceleration Therapy) and Functional Electrical Stimulation (of muscles and bones.) All three together are believed to release stem cells from bone marrow if done concurrently!

One day we will be able to live to be 1000!

For a video on the use of intermittent hypoxia for rejuvenation go to this website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMpyA5-Q2hs For the older person over fifty (50) Dr. Steenblock usually recommends hormones called colony stimulating factors to prod the body to mobilize senescent (non functioning) stem cells into the patients blood stream. After a course of these injections it is believed that basically only healthy stem cells remain behind in the marrow and these then begin reproducing very rapidly in order to replace the cells

in two weeks time a patients bone marrow can have upwards of 10 times more healthy stem cells than were present prior to the injections.
that have been mobilized. Dr. Steenblock feels that Once a patients bone marrow is brimming with robust, healthier stem cells, Dr. Steenblock harvests this and gives it back to patients by intravenous (IV) drip or in some instances by other routes. In terms of antiaging this basically floods the body with stem cells which are believed to fan out, engraft in organs

many people who have had this treatment have reported seeing antiand tissues and effect healing and restoration. Not surprisingly,

aging effects like better skin color, a healthier glow and fewer wrinkles.
More recently Dr. Steenblock added the use of fat derived stem cells (by themselves or in combination with bone marrow) to combat various diseases as well as aging.

If you are serious about tackling aging, this is not something you can do on your own. Indeed, the only way to do this right is to involve a doctor-partner who is an expert in both chronic disease & antiaging medicine; someone who knows how to zero in on what a person needs and then make sure they get it. This is Americas antiaging and more doctor Dr. David Steenblock..
