READYING FOR WAR

Preparation
Union Soldiers volunteered to join the army. Expecting the war to be short, the military service term was very short. Soldiers were poorly trained. Soldiers were given plentiful ries and ammunitions.

Ulysses Grant-bear with a beard -Westpoint Graduate and Mexican War hero -fought in Shiloh, Belmont, Henry, Donelson,Vicksburg, Chattanoog a, Petersburg, Appommattox, etc... -He failed in every aspect of being a normal civilian.

Andrew Johnson-named Military Governor of Tennessee -only Southern Senator to remain with the Union -President after Lincolns assassination -extinguished many southern upheavals in Tennessee -White trash in childhood and looks like an alcoholic

George A. Custer-graduated from West Point -participated in Bull Run, Antietem, Gettysburg, etc... -had a really long mustache making him look like a rat -He did many odd jobs for his future wifes family but was never allowed in to the house.

-Location: Spotsylvania and Orange County -Stimulus: Grants Overland Campaign -Leader: Grant and Meade -while other union general ed, he persevered -Union suffered heavier losses though it was considered an inconclusive battle. However, Grant continued on his Overland Campaign

-Location: Atlanta, Georgia -Stimulus: Urge to quickly end the war -Leader: William T. Sherman and Meade -The Southern armies retreated quite nimbly and strategically, but the Sherman laid siege and moved into Atlanta. -The battle was successful, but it didnt end the war

Battle of Appomattox Courthouse

-Location: Appomattox County, Virginia -Stimulus: End battle and trap Robert E. Lees troops -Leader: Grant the Butcher -Lees army attempted to escape Grants closing gaps of cavalries, but the arrival of Grants infantry forced him to surrender. -The Union victory ended the war in Virginia andcivilwarhome.com conclusively, the war. -Little Casualties of about 700 men in total pg.6

Immigrants
some fought for the union but some refused to after the Emancipation Proclamation passed. Still, many worked in factories to keep the northern economy going.

Spies
Although in its infancy, espionages gave advantages to the south more as they easily formed secret espionage tactics in the North. The North was unable to effectively monitor such turmoil.

-relied on hard biscuits, beans, and bacon -suffered from body lice, dysentery, and diarrhea (horrible sanitation) -letters mostly about the sanitary conditions in the lines and hunger -played instrument, danced, and drank a lot for recreation -many served for three-years -mortality rate for colored troops 35% higher than other troops

Life on the Home Front


-back at home, women took care of many of the mens job -near the battlefront, women served as nurses to help with the sanitation and the wounded -many brothers turned against each other with their divided ideas of the war -the economy was doing well overall and many businesses ourished. -abundance of resources

Effects of the War


-Almost none of the northern states were untampered with while the southern states plantations and railroads were struck with havoc -The hard feelings were well amended in the North -The Union lost 360,000 men and 275,000 were wounded -passed acts and laws favorable to the North during the war -The prejudice and sentiments against the African Americans still remain

THE AFTERMATH OF THE CIVIL WAR


The North should help the South rise to its feet quickly as it can. That should be their priority.

Some reconstruction plans were too lenient to the South. The Federal government wanted their legislature to issue the plan, not the executive branch.

Reconstruction was intended to readmit the Southern states into the Union and build the broken country back.
