Saponins
are a class of chemical compounds, one of manysecondary metabolites found in natural sources, with saponins foundin particular abundance in various plant species.Specifically, they are amphipathic glycosides groupedphenomenologically by the soap-like foaming they produce whenshaken in aqueous solutions, and structurally by their compositionof one or more hydrophilic glycoside moieties combined with alipophilic triterpene derivative

These compounds give a permanent froth whenshaken with water. They also causehemolysisof red blood cells.Their medicinal value is due to theirexpectorant, andcorticoid andanti-inflammatory effects.Steroid saponins for example in Dioscorea wildyam, the sapogenin diosgenin, in form of itsglycoside dioscin, is an important starting materialfor production of semi-syntheticglucocorticoidsand othersteroid hormonessuch asprogesterone.
