Thurs day la st week was a very m
eaningful day for m e. We students
had no classes on that day but we
came to school for The International
Day to hopefully learn something
outside of the academic category.
That day was called “A Day in The
World’s Shoes”. What it meant by
that was to actually feel and
understand how life is like to live in
poverty. We did some activities
(more like games) and they were
quite fun. It was a chance for me to
know the difficulty of those who are
handicappe d. One of the activities
was each student, in groups, received
a paper and on that paper, there were
words describing how that student
should be handicapped. For example,
if it was “immobile”, the student
wouldn’t be able to move. So, every
person in the groups had their own
problems. Even so, they all had to
cross the “bridge”. This was quite a
problem for us since some parts of
our body could not function, making
it harder to cross the bridge. The “bag
paper making” activity was the
chance for me to know that there are
people who try to work their tails off
in order just to survive. We made
bags in houses and my house the first
time didn’t make to pay the rent so
we went to the bridge… We also met
the East Meets West Organization
and our school is together with them
raising the money to build a school in
Dong Nai province for the poor
children.
There were a lot of things that I did
not realize until that Thursday. I do
know that there are people who live
in poverty but I never expected it to
reach the number of two billion. It
was a shock to actually acknowledge
that that much people are making less
than two dollars a day. I also

On November 6th 2008, SSIS held
an event called “A Day In The
World’s Shoes.” This was a day that
when the middle schoolers and high
schoolers came together to try to
understand what exactly is going on
in the world. A group of people came
down from Hong Kong to talk to us
students about what really is going on
in the world, the kind of stuff that
people don’t really know about.
During the day we played a few
games, and listened to various
speeches. The games were to get us
to put ourselves in others shoes, for
instance we played a paper bag

understand that even I - a young
teenager - can do something to help
reducing this number. Maybe what I
do will not be enough but if there are
many people who are like me,
knowing that they could do
something to help poor people, they
and I could make a change to the
world. I thought that our planet does
not have enough resources and they
are reducing every year but some
people have a lot of those things.
Now I know that there are so many
“stuffs” that are on our planet and
there are so many places that need
them but the thing is those stuffs are
not in the right place. And this is a
problem for us to help the poor.
One possible answer for poverty is
raising fund to support the people
who live in it. And our school is, like
making game. We learned from it
that there are thousands of families
that live to make paper bags, it’s the
only thing that can hopefully make
money. These people live in very
small slums, like the size of a double
bed, and all they do all day is make
paper bags. While we played this
game it was as if we didn’t care what
was going around us, we only
focused on making paper bags
because we wanted to survive. For
lunch that day we ate rice, potatoes,
and carrots for lunch, which is like
the basic food poor people would eat
in a whole day, because its all that
they could afford. Then, later
through out the day their were quite a

I said before, together with East
Meets West raising some money to
build a school. I think we could, in
homerooms, try to come up with
some events and selling things in
those events. For instance, Christmas
is coming soon, we can sell
something like Christmas cards or
Santa marshmallows for example. We
can even give some service in these
events, such as teaching origami, how
to knit hat from wool,… I don’t really
want us to just donate the money but I
want us to have profit in both
directions so that we can all have
something for ourselves in the end.

got us to open our eyes and say “oh
my god, that really is happening in
our world? Why isn’ there anyone
doing anything about it?” It was a
great experience that made me look
differently on our world, it made me
want to be more active in helping out.
For me it was a a very good
opportunity to see what is happening
in the world today. It’s so sad to
know that we have enough money
and food for everyone in the world to
survive off of, and yet others are
struggling for survival. The whole
day made me feel a bit sad, because
just knowing what people have to do
to survive. David mentioned that you
can help the world at any age,
weather your 3 or 40, you can still
help to make a difference in the world

A day of
the world’s
shoes

Last Thursday, during the day of the
world’s shoes I could not participate
in most of the activities that we did
because I was one of the Athletic
leadership people. The Athletic
leadership people were divided into
three groups that day. We had to
create an activity with the theme of
“A day of the world’s shoes”. My
group came up with an activity which
helps us experience how people in
poverty work so hard just to obtain
the basic necessities. We placed about
thirty boxes with different weights,
each representing a basic object, in
one end and the students in another
end. The student were divided into
five groups and each pair in the group
had to run to the boxes and carry the
boxes one at a time from the most
necessary to the least. Finally, the
group with the most necessary objects
to survive wins. During the sessions
of this game, I had to announce the
reasons why we are experiencing this
activity and for what purpose. At the
end of the day, My group and I had to
clean up the boxes and their weights
inside of it. Overall, it was a hard day
because our group had to do the
sessions out in the soccer field where
the sun directly hit us.
Although I did not get to
expercience most of the activities
during that day, I was greatly inspired
by David’s (the crossroad member)
speech. David made a long speech,
telling us about his past and how he
joined the crossroads. He also

For our school we are trying to
build a school for poor kids, and we
need to have different activities to
raise money. Some ideas that I have
is that our school could maybe have a
special day when we sell bakery stuff
at home, or we can make fun t-shirts
to sell that can help donate money to
building the school. Or even we
could have a special day of the month
that we can have a charity day, which
is like paying to get your face painted
or just have different carnival games,
just like the Halloween carnival. So
as you can see there are well over
enough things that we can do to raise
money.

A Day In the World’s Shoes

November 6th was the day of the
event called “A Day in the World
shoes,” it was really interesting.
There was a group of people who
came from Hong Kong to make the
presentation for our school’s student
about the problem of poverty on the
world. We did so many activities; for
the first game, we had to take off our
shoes and mixed all of them together
and put on a random pair, then we
divided into 8 teams and started the
game; we had to carry water use any
kind of container that you have, from
two big containers in the middle of
the field back to your team’s buckert.
From this game, we learned how poor
people don’t have shoes to wear and
they have to go for a really long way
just to carry a little mount of water
from whatever container that they
have. The second game is sort of
same as the first one, we had to carry
a lot of heavy things which can help
us to survive, in a realyl sunny

Last Thursday was really
interesting: fun and educative. First,
the speech of Mr. David from Cross
Road was truly amazing. His words,
his stories about lives of poor people
in Bangladesh and about how he
became the director of his charity
company got to us, that’s why we
never got bored although we sat in
the auditorium for more than 1 hour.
Then, under the direction of the
Athletic scholarship students, we
played many games that simulated
the working conditions of poor
people: we had to wear 2 shoes of
different types and sizes then run to
get water to fill our bucket (the first
activity). In the second game, we
played on the soccer field which was
really sunny and hot, we also had to
take off our shoes and run to collect
the item we thought to be most
important for survival. (Some of the
box might be awfully heavy like mine
and Hain’s, we had to carry a box
with a giant water bottle inside. ^^)
After that, 1 member of each group
made a speech about why they chose
that item. When we were all
exhausted after all the activities, we
can have lunch which was composed
of rice, carrots, potatoes, some
vegetables and a cup of tea. This was
the first time I’ve ever had lunch like
this! In the afternoon, we were
divided into families for the last
activity. We need to make paper bag
as quick as possible to pay for food,
rent, sanitation, school, etc
I love our last activity: the paper
bag making game. By doing that, I
came to understand more about daily
lives of poor people. I was shocked to
find out that the 2 times 2 meters
weather. Then we went up to the
classes to listen to another
presentation from the seniors and it’s
lunch time. Guess what we ate? All
we had were rice with vegetables, and
a really bitter iced tea. After lunch,
we had the most intersting activity of
the day in the auditirium. We out
ourselves into a group which
represented a family unit. We had to
make paper bad and sold it to those
shopkeepers to earn money to afford
the payment for rent, food, doctor and
school. Sometimes, we met an evil
shopkeeper that you had to do
something to exchange money. For
my family, I had to sell myself to get
money, and stayed at the shopkeeper
place to clean up paper. What a great
experiment!
Through this event, I can easily
understand what poor people do in
their daily life. What I saw are they
have to carry lots of heavy things
from a place where it;s very far away
from where they live. They have to
do lots of hard works from early in
the morning till but all they can earn
is a really small amount of money,
canvas we were sitting on was about
the same size as the house of a 5
members family in Bangladesh.
When we were making paper bags,
we only focused in making as many
as we can to pay for our needs just
like those poor people, they don’t
have time to think about their own
future, they just do their best to
survive. That game was really fun for
us because we just made paper bags
for almost half an hour; but poor
people do that every day under the
stress and fear of not having enough
money for survival. It should become
terribly boring! Not only that, I also
acknowledged that shopkeepers are
also very cruel. Some of them ripped
off all our paper bags just because I
most of them can’t even earn more
can one dollar a day. Anyway, I feel
this event is really useful because
most of us can totally understand how
poor people live day by day, what
they do and what they eat.
However, as what we learned
throughout the event, we got an
important message, “you can change
the world at any age.” I believe that if
you have the thought to change the
world, or help poor people, no matter
how old are you, you can do it. The
most directly way to help is to raise
money, I think this group of people
can go to more schools and make the
presentation or organize more
activities so that more people or
student can understand this serious
problem. Ar our school, we can do
some fund raising to raise money and
help those poor people. I believe that
ltos of students at our school will love
to join the fund raising after
experienced this event.

About how to help poor people, I
think we can raise money by selling
food, drink in SSIS. We can also
organize a assembly in the auditorium
to talk to students how much poor
kids need their help and ask them to
contribute stuffs that they don’t use
anymore like clothes, school
equipments, toys,… We can also
contact companies and ask for their
help. In exchange, we can reserve
some place of our school to advertise
for their product.

What I felt on
a day of
world’s shoes.

On a day of world’s shoes, I did a
lots of activities which show how
poor people live in hard lives. Most
interesting avtivity was making paper
bag. We made a family and worked
for live. So, we used exactly same
materials to make paper bag and
earned money by this working. Girls
keep making for 30 minutes and we
never stopped. While we making it
boys went to shop and sell what we
made. If we had enough money, we
should go and pay for rent or school.
It was first time for all of us, so it was
really hard to do it at once, so we
decided to divide our job. One person
folded the paper up then person next
to him glued the paper. Therefore, we
could have a great achievement. For
this activity, I learned people really
work hard and also they live very
difficulty. Actually, for this activity,
when I got up in the next morning,
my whole body just very hurt and
painful. I realized again that it’s
really not comfortable. If I have my
daily life as they do, I think I can’t
stand on it.
Also, I watched presentation which
is about North Korea and It was my
first time to see how does North
Korea look like and I really surprised.
I used to heard that North Korean live
in poverty so many people are trying
to escape to other country like China.
The presentation shows me how they
try to escape and some people success
to escape, but most people can not. I
wondered how would happen for
those people. They showed me babies
who couldn’t eat, so they were so
skinny and looks not very good. I was
so sad when I saw them. I felt so
sorry for North Korean people,
because even through the country
separated, we are one nation people.
The presentation about North Korea
actually shocked me.
So, to help them, I think people
should be more active on the charity
and donation. Some people really
don’t care about how proverty people
live. However, how can people begin
to concern to them? Donation money
is the easiest thing to do. People
should try. If they don’t even try, then
it’s same as kill people. World should
change and people should live in
peace.

Poverty: Can we break the cycle?

After hearing about poor homeless
children in India, Africa, etc on
Thursday, I was amazed by the large
number of poverty. People, in such
countries like Philippines, India,
Africa, etc, are living in a slum house,
eating cornbread if their parents can
afford and using “bag toilets”. Parents
have to suffer in city to make money
in order to feed their children and
stop them from dying. They do
everything for survival. In India, they
make paper bags all day long to sell
in market which cost only 25cents.
Isn’t it a crazy number? Why do they
still keep doing that? The answer is
because there is no other way that
they can make money for living.
They don’t have chance to get the
education; therefore, that is the only
way. Can you believe that 2.8
millions of people on the Earth are
living less than 1 US dollar per day?
That almost costs nothing to us who
are so lucky. On Thursday, A day in
the world’s shoes, we had a chance to
live in these poor people’ lives. We
suffered under the sun to get water,
rice, woods which are necessary for
living, having lunch in a banana leaf
with boiled carrots, potatoes, made
paper bag in the unit of a family on a
mat which is a size of a ghetto.
Thursday was a great day for us to
know how poor people are living and
suffering. By that, we feel sorry and
try to figure out the way to help them.
On Thursday, some of us cried
because we heard the fact that none

Last Thursday was a really
meaningful day to me. It started with
a dance of the High School Dance
Team and a brief introduction of
David. He told us how he began
doing charity. Then we did a lot of
activities, and we tried to put
ourselves to others people - poor
people. We changed ourselves into
many kinds of people such as:
peasants, handicapped. There were
some activities that we had to be
someone else in different classes
which we were not allowed to know,
and we would be looked at by others
to see the feelings of these real people
who is in the reality. Also, we
watched the presentation of a school
in Dong Nai and knew that the
facilities of the school was going
down. The most impressing to me

explained the lives of people in
poverty, countries in poverty and all
the personal experiences he had about
poverty throughout his life. In total
that day, David made his speech for
one hour and fourty minutues which
is really difficult to do without
loosing the audience’s attention.
Despite the difficulty, David got
through it extremely well. Not a
single minute I was bored or
of us believe that exists on Earth.
How can it be impossible? It might
seem impossible but it is possible.
“It’s our world and it needs our
hands.” Mr.David from Crossroad in
Hongkong said. He said that we can
help at any ages which I thought we
could only when we are 18. It’s really
true. I can even do something, of
course not as much as adults do, but
at least I could do something at my
age. Living in a slum house seems
unbelievable to me and my friends as
well. To me, this is the enormous
issue that I have to find the solutions.
I think we could do some
fundraising to get the money to build
perhaps was the lunch, we had
nothing except vegetable and rice. At
that time, I asked myself how their
life was if they ate that kind of lunch
everyday. And the afternoon was
really interesting, we “lived” the life
of the poor people. In order to
survive, we had to make paper bags
distracted. He sometimes had
seriousness which made me silently
think about the people in poverty and
other times he was a great humor
which made me laugh and enjoy the
speech better.
As I look back to that day, I
realized I have learned so many
things from David’s speech. I never
knew that one person could make a
difference before. But after David’s
houses for these people. That’s what
our school is doing, called “Together
We Build”. By holding art bazaar,
Canadian Rocks, etc, we got some
money for that. I think we can even
have some volunteers to go these
ghettoes in order to help these people
out and also teach children how to
read and make different things, such
as making paper stars, etc which they
can sell. We can bring the technology
to these village so they can have a
factory which produces products so it
helps to improve their lives.

Secondly, the power of human is
really strong if they want to survive.
They can do everything providing
speech, I learned that one person can
make a difference and also that age

difference by reaching out a hand for
the people in poverty. Raising enough
money to make a difference is an
almost impossible task for me to
accomplish alone. Therefore our
school, SSIS, can work harder
towards fundraising for charity. We

Last Thursday was an international
day, so our school had an activity.
The activity was like what if we are
in others’ shoes? At first, I really
didn’t want to join the activity, but I
did. I’m the new student so I don’t
know what happened on last
international day, I asked my friends
and they told me that last time they
brought some their countries’
traditional food and wore traditional
clothing. That’s why I was really
excited. But when I came to school in
the morning, it was extremely
different with the last activity. At first
in the morning, we went to the
auditorium and listened to people’s
talking, then we did some games.
At first I really hated this activity.
Because I didn’t want to be tired, but
after joining the activity, I felt that
people who are very poor all aroung
the world, they must be tired than me,
so I decided not to complain with this
activity. I thought that I am very
happy because I can do anything what
I want to do, I can eat anything what I
want to eat, but the poor people in the
world, they cannot do anything or eat

that they can save themselves and
their family. Even me, in my family
there was a girl who was my “enemy”
but we helped each other in order to
make money for the family. It was
not until that Thursday that I realized
a lot about our lives which are not as
we usually think of.
In my opinion, we should make a
website or a forum in order to raise
fund. We can mke a website for
people to sign up to donation.
Otherwise, videos or posters may be
useful. I know that because the video
which I saw in Thursday really
effected on me. We need your help.
Your help is small but it changes the
world. Together we will break the
poverty cycle.

Poverty - A Day in the
World’s Shoes

On last thursday, November 6th, we
had an international day, called “A
Day in the World’s Shoes”. It was a
day when we could learn about the
poverty around the world. Our school
invited the committee called
“crossroads”. We started the day with
David, a representative from
crossroads. He talked about what is
going on in today’s world. Although
he talked in a funny way, the problem
was serious. He emphasized that we
all can change the world. After his
speech, we were divided into several
groups and had many activities. We
carried water from big basket to small
baskets. This was to understand how
people get their water. We also had
an activity that we had to bring things
that we need for survival. This helped
us know what we really need for out
lives. After group activities, we
listened to a woman’s speech. She
talked about the specific things about
poverty. After her speech, we got into

anything even though they want to
do. I thought if we can, we must help
those people because they really need
our help.The man who spoke at the
auditorium(forgot the name..) he said
we can help them anytime if we
want, the age doesn’t matter, if we
want, we can help them right now.
I think we should make some
groups that is supposed to help those
people, so we can riase some money
to help them, or if we can’t make that
kind of groups, then we can look for
the groups that always help poor
people and join that group. Anyways,
several groups again and went to the
classrooms. In the classrooms, we
learned about the refugee camps. We
also watched a video about North
Korean refugee camp. Then we had
lunch. The lunch was rice with
vegetables on the leaves. We had to
eat with our hands. First, we found it
dirty and bad, but it was okay later.
After lunch, we had a really exciting
activity. We had to make paper bags.
We had to make a lot of paper bags in
a little time to pay for rent, food,
education, and sanitation. When we
were doing this activity, we were all
in a rush and did not think that people
are doing this everyday to survive.
When I thought about that, I felt
really sad about those people. It was
the end of our day in the world’s
shoes. I am glad that our school is
going to buid a school for poor
people. I really liked the activities
and I could learn many things about
poverty around the world.

it is good to help the people who need
help from other peoople, I decided
that I should help them if I have a
chance to do it, and if I get so much
money in the future, I will help the
people who need help and I will go to
the orphan’s center and play or give
children some clothes or something
so that I can give them so much
happiness.
