SARATOGA,Calif.Thisweek,theMontalvoArtsCenter announcesitsmostambitiousscheduleofsummercamps todate:32differentoneweekandtwoweeklong childrensprogramsfocusingonmusic,dance,visualarts, theatre,circusarts,andworldculture,alltaughtbya distinguishedgroupofBayAreaartistsandarts professionals.ThefirstcycleofclassesbeginsonJune11 andthelastofthesummerrunsthroughAugust21. RegistrationbeginsforthegeneralpubliconFebruary22, withregistrationavailableinadvancetomembers beginningFebruary10.Withitssummercampprogram, Montalvoaddressesaneedforartseducationforchildren inthisarea,continuesanimportanttradition,andreaffirmsthetenantsofitsmissionstatementin this,itscentennialyear.

PartofwhatmakesMontalvosuchauniqueandrelevantorganizationisourabsolute commitmenttocelebratingandfosteringthecreativespirit,saidMontalvoExecutiveDirector, AngelaMcConnell.Ourchildrenseducationprogramiscentraltothisendeavor.Atatimewhen artseducationinCaliforniapublicschoolshasbeencuttoaminimum,wefeelitisimperativeto ourmissiontoofferthechildrenofSiliconValleyopportunitiestoengageinthecreativeprocess.

Someoftheexcitingcampsessionsinclude: AfricanCultureThroughStories,Songs,Drums,andDance:MasankhoBandawillleadthis oneweeklongcelebrationofthecustomsthroughwhichAfricanfolktalesandothertraditions havebeenhandeddownthroughthecenturies. AllThingsStrings:LedbyBarbaraDayTurner,thefounderandmusicaldirectorofthe renownedSanJoseChamberOrchestra,youngmusicianswillenjoydailysessionsfocusingon differentmusicalstylesrangingfrombaroquetomodernjazzwhiletheyeachworkto composetheirownshortmusicalcompositions. CircusArts:Theperfectopportunityforyourchildtolearnaboutcircusartsthroughjuggling, clowningandbasicacrobatics,whilecultivatingcoordination,strength,andselfconfidence. MeettheMasters:Picasso:Childrenwillhavetheireyesopenedtothelifeandworkofoneof thegreatestmastersofModernismthroughvariousCubistpaintingexercises. MissoulaChildrensTheatre:Thepreeminenttravelingchildrenstheatrecompanywillleada seriesofworkshopsonstagedesign,voice,andactingtechnique,allculminatingina performanceintheCarriageHouseTheatre.

Montalvohasofferedsummerartscampprogramstochildrenformorethan30years,butinthe pasttwoyears,theCenterhasactivelysoughttoincreaseitseducationalofferings.In2011, MontalvohireditsfirsteverDirectorofEducation,RuthMankin,whohaspresidedoverthis periodofgrowth.WhenSenatorJamesPhelanbequeathedtheVillaMontalvoandsurrounding groundstothepeopleofCalifornia,itwashisexplicitwishthattheestatewouldbeusedto benefitthecommunitybysupportingthearts,saidMankin.Lastyear,wehonoredPhelans mandateandhismemorybyprovidingartseducationto15,000childrenover6,000ofthemTitle 1studentswhoattendedsessionshereonscholarship.Inthis,ourcentennialyear,weare challengingourselvestosurpassthesenumbers.Ourexpandedsummercampscheduleispartof thisinitiative.
