CACTUS LEAGUE ACTION: The Padres enter todays game at 3-6...over the Spring slate, the Friars play a total of 34 games in Arizona before heading home for a workout on 4/2 followed by two games against the Royals (4/3 at Petco Park and 4/4 in Lake Elsinore)...the clubs Cactus League schedule includes five remaining split-squad games (March 14, 18, 24, 27, 31). LAST TIME OUT: The Padres dropped an 8-7 decision to the Diamondbacks yesterday, letting a one-run lead slip away in the ninth...the Friars threatened in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with a solo shot by Blake Tekotte and finally going down with the tying and winning runs on base...Robbie Erlin (2.0), Ernesto Frieri (1.0), Joe Thatcher (1.0) and Cory Burns (1.0) each tossed scoreless ball for the Friars...in addition to Tekotte, Orlando Hudson also connected, hitting a two-run shot in the fourth inning. TODAYS STARTER: Cory Luebke takes the hill today, making his second start of the Spring...he struck out four over 2.0 scoreless innings in his first outing 3/7 at CIN...signed as the 63rd overall pick in 2007, he made his first Opening Day roster in 2011, beginning the season in the bullpen before making his way to the starting rotation...he finished the year with 17 starts and 29 relief appearances, going 5-8 with a 3.31 ERA (37 ER/100.2 IP) as a starter... limited opponents to a .209 average on the year, fifth-best ever by a Padres pitcher with 100-or-more innings pitched and the best ever by a Padres rookie. ON THE MEND: INF Logan Forsythe underwent a procedure Friday, performed by Dr. Heinz Hoenecke at the Scripps Surgery Center Carmel Valley, to have a bone in his left foot removedrecovery time is estimated at six to eight weeks. THE FUTURE: Eight of the Padres top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America, are in camp this Spring...that list includes INF Yonder Alonso (1), C Yasmani Grandal (2), OF Rymer Liriano (3), RHP Casey Kelly (4), INF Cory Spangenberg (5), INF Jedd Gyorko (7), RHP Joe Wieland (8) and LHP Robbie Erlin (9)...Baseball America also recently released their ranking of the top 100 prospects in baseball, including Alonso (33), Grandal (53), Kelly (76), Spangenberg (78) and Gyorko (98)in total, the club had six players featured in the top 100 which were tied for the most among all clubs (also, Athletics, Cardinals and Rangers). ROSTER TALK: The Padres have 61 players in Big League camp...with a full 40-man roster and 21 non-roster invitees, the squad features 29 pitchers (eight southpaws), seven catchers, 15 infielders and 10 outfielders...entering camp, the club has 16 players on the 40-man roster who were not at the beginning of 2011 Spring Training. ROOKIE ROUND-UP: 29 of the 61 players in camp will qualify as rookies in the 2012 season, with 13 of those 29 on the 40-man roster...the 13 consist of Brad Brach, Erik Hamren, Nick Vincent, Jose De Paula, Juan Oramas, Yasmani Grandal, James Darnell, Andy Parrino, Edinson Rincon, Cory Spangenberg, Jeudy Valdez, Rymer Liriano and Blake Tekotte. SPRING HOME: The Padres, Mariners and city of Peoria announced an extension earlier this month, keeping Spring Training baseball at the Peoria Sports Complex until 2034...the Padres have called Peoria home since relocating from Yuma in 1994. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the clubs Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the clubs history.
