President Amy called meeting to order 1200 @Western Pacific Brewery Flag Salute Rotarian Mike Venum Invocation by Rotarian Lou Rotar . Table Introductions: Rotarian Bill Chef, Rotarian Sal Rodriquez mentioned 5 great Rotarians Oh and guest Vicki Silva Literacy Program, Rotarian Charles Plummer 2 seats for fantastic guest coming, PPRotarian Mike Hutton mentioned another table, Rotarian Sam Chimento proudly introduced Newly appointed Palermo Superintendent Dr. Jacqueline Dolar. President Amy mentioned the Thank You letters from the Ophir school 3rd grade students and passed out to membership. President Amy asked John Hancock to report on the bowling tournament activity. He mentioned over 50 rotarian bowlers and Noon Rotary team did well considering the bowling exp. of President. President Amy announced April 28 ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY and discussed some of the possibilities including Sunrise Rotary has 3 projects in Oroville area. Gridley Rotary is partnering with Recology an doing painting project at Gridley fairgrounds. More information to follow. Nancy Ritchie passed out the new Rotarians at work T Shirts. Sam Chimento introduced Nelson Principle Jim Walters with Parents of Gabriel Moreno. Recognitions: Rotarian Keith Stutznegger 20$ discussed his history to Oroville trained in Family Dentistry from Bay Area moved here June 1978 wife just retired and Keith is still working!!. Has always enjoyed Rotary and Rotary friends. Has coordinated the Scholarship program for last 20 years offering $4,000 dollars. Very rewarding activity to interview and review the students. Rotarian Sal Rodriquez commented on his good fellow Rotarian who he called on for an emergency dental repair and he wanted to thank fellow Rotarian Stutznegger who helped in a crisis. Rotarian Mike Ramsey recognized 20$ discussed he was born a raised in Oroville long time family OUHS graduate attended UCBerkeley in 60s returned as a substitute school teacher for while, writing for Oroville Mercury doing crime and courts beat. Decided the bar was his new field of endeavor, after Sacramento DAs office he arrived in May 1 1978 to Butte County working at DAs office in 1987 appointed to DA an since that appointment reelected numerous times. Rotarian David Pittman announced a special meeting for local businessmen on April 11, 2012 0730 to 1000am at Hafbrau Hauss, 109 Table Mountain Blvd. contact Oroville Chamber of Commerce or Jamie Hayes at 530 538 2535 for registration. $15 dollars (includes breakfast). Titled the Pulse of Retail the seminar will report the findings of the Buxton report providing a retail market analysis of the Oroville community. All business owners, operators and economic development professionals are encouraged to attend. Rotarian Lou Rotar mentioned to Madam President making request for return for the Presidents Bell, Please return its well past time! Student of the Month: Rotarian Sam Chimento introduced Gabriel Moreno, Nelson Avenue Principle Jim Walters described Gabriel as a Straight A student, Honor Roll, popular Leader, Honor Society, Make a Wish Foundation Fundraiser are few of his activities at Nelson. He favors Science and math along with membership in Cal Jr. Scholastic Foundation. Likes volleyball and other sports and participated with CJSF fundraiser tho help family with a needy child. Gabriel is planning to attend medical school and his past hard work, caring for others an conscientious nature with his work may prove to be successful in future endeavors. Noon Rotary is proud to recognize Gabriel as the Student of the Month and the membership provided a warm welcome.

Program: Rotarian Penny Chennel-Carter introduced Vicki Silva, Instructor Reading Program Specialist also a past Rotary Teacher of the Year. Vicki attended Sacramento State later to Chico State in 1986 teaching at Wyandotte School after 1st grade 8 years and now serves as Reading Specialist for 28 years. Vickie mentioned she grew up here and attended Eastside, Bird St., Central, OUHSD schools. Assigned to Wyandotte School she has 28 years teaching experience there. Vicki mentioned what literacy instruction is now offering, core literature instruction is 2 hours per day of instruction. Also 1/2 hour intervention program daily to provide additional support for another dose of instruction or longer term strategy. Vicki talked about the details of this delivery including some before and after school time where necessary. Providing independent level reading that allows students to achieve Vicki Silva success in the million words (150 books) competition along with awards for achievement. Just finished Dr Susses Reading celebration day March 2. Added a family literacy night to involve entire family with the fun of reading. Vicki added a video presentation which shared the students in class and the details of learning exercises. Vocabulary Parade with students dressed up and participating, Book walk Guest readers from the community, Book Swap program Study trips, Reading Fun in school were some of the many programs delivered at Wyandotte. Sam Chimento also commented on the school activity are now a highly complex and intensive delivery here in Oroville. He mentioned some very highly talented folks providing the core subjects with an outstanding group of instructors. What is happening in classrooms coming down the Common Core Content Standards is behind the California experience. He discussed the 5 years olds expectation of literacy skills is commensurate with the needs for intensive higher level of literacy and higher levels. Sam offered his observation from his (44+) many years and different teaching experiences and he Encourages us to support local efforts as we have some very talented teachers delivering fantastic instruction to our youth.
