Grade: 5 Time: 15 minutes Standard: SL.5.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Objective: The student will listen as the teacher reads aloud, stopping to make predictions, connections, and wonderings. Materials: Mr. Peabodys Apples By Madonna Lesson Sequence: Before Reading: o Boys and girls today I am going to read to you a story by Madonna. The book is called Mrs. Peabodys Apples. I love this book because it has a very important message that can be learned from it. Now I want you to look at the cover and tell me what you think is going to happen or what this book might be about. Can you make a prediction? o Allow students to predict and discuss. o Those are all excellent ideas boys and girls. Now I am going to being reading in order to determine if you predictions are confirmed. Remember students, that predictions can never be wrong since they are only what we think may happen. If we determine that our predictions were not confirmed while reading then we will make new ones. While I am reading you can raise your hand if your prediction is confirmed, or if we need to make a new one. During Reading: o Be sure to pay attention to when students raise their hands. Occasionally stop reading in order to allow students to confirm or make new ones. Stop during confusing parts, critical parts, or when students need to be reengaged. o Page 5: What do you think is going to happen to Mr. Peabody? o Page 16: Why do you think Mr. Peabody isnt paying for the apples? o Page 23: How do you think Johnny feels? After Reading: o Students now I want you to turn to a neighbor and talk about a few things: What was your favorite part in the story? Did you like it?

 How many of your predictions came true? o After a couple minutes, have a whole class discussion about these questions. o We made excellent predictions that helped us determine what was going to happen through out this story. Assessment: The students were actively listening and participating in making predictions and connections to the story. o
