In India today there are over twenty million abandoned and impoverished children roaming the streets of the

larger cities and the dirt paths of the villages. These children often find shelter and work at train stations working as porters and rickshaw pullers. Or they earn pennies a day sweeping, selling newspapers or bottles of water, running errands, or shining shoes.

They could be children whose parents were too poor to raise them. They could be children whose parents have died or whose lives were devastated by an accident that left them incapable of fending for themselves, let alone a child. They could be children who have been abandoned at birth because their poverty stricken parents simply could not shoulder the additional burden of a child. Although charitable acts like providing the basics of food, shelter and medicine are good, they are not sufficient. Without family, education or a means of basic life support, attending school is not an option for the vast majority of these children. These children need not only to be fed and sheltered - they need to be nurtured, educated both academically and technologically, so they can be productive members of society in their adult lives. Most importantly they need to be surrounded and infused with the values, ethics and spirituality that will remove the labels of 'orphan', 'poor' or 'unwanted' and instead let them grow to be optimistic young people filled with hope and the qualities of service and leadership. Hand In Hand USA is sponsoring an orphanage/residential school in Arua, in the district of Kendrapara, a location near Balighai. It has been named 'Hariharananda Balashram'. The word balashram means 'school for children'. Starting with groups of 40 children per year, the ultimate twelve year plan is to have as many as 480 boys and girls living and studying at Hariharananda Balashram.
