DVAR TORAH SHAVUOT The holiday of Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of our receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Torah is our blueprint and instruction manual for life itself and the source of our spiritual freedom. The Jewish people received their physical freedom on Passover but had to wait seven full weeks until they were ready to receive the Torah. During this interim period, the Jewish people toiled constantly on their attributes until they became spiritually transformed from a nation of slaves to G-d's chosen people. We also read the Book of Ruth on Shavuot. One of the reasons that we read the Book of Ruth is because Shavuot is the birthday and Yahrzheit of King David. King David's matriarchal ancestor was Ruth, who was a righteous convert and Moabite princess who preferred to leave her exalted status and position in order to join the Jewish people. Ruth was known for tremendous acts of devotion, kindness and goodness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. She eventually married a relative of Naomi, Boaz, who was head of the "Sanhedrin - Jewish Religious High Court." Even though Boaz died on their wedding night, from this union she gave birth to a child, Ovad, who was the grandfather of King David. SHAVUOT MISHMAR Prior to our receiving the Torah on the first Shavuot, G-d caused the weather to be perfect so that we would sleep deeply in order to have the strength to receive G-d's presence and to receive the Torah. Much to our embarrassment, we all overslept and almost missed receiving the Torah. To make amends and to show Hashem our love for him, many Jews remain awake all night on the first night of Shavuot, studying different passages of Torah

at a Mishmar, literally an all night watch or vigil. Come join us at our Mishmar as we explore the revelation experience. THE THREE WEEKS AND THE NINE DAYS Bain Hametzariim - Between the Narrows, is how our sages refer to the three week period between the fast of Shiva Asar BTamuz - The seventeenth of Tammuz, and between the fast of Tisha Bav - The ninth day of Av. This year the fast of the seventeenth day of Tammuz is observed on Sunday, July 8. The period is one of profound sadness and bad luck when the Jewish people commemorate the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem which eventually led to the destruction of the second Temple. In fact, both Temples were destroyed on Tisha Bav. As this is a period of bad luck and mourning, we avoid going to civil court or entering into business deals that are other than routine. We also refrain from pleasurable activities such as live performances, plays, operas, musicals, movies or listening to music. We also do not cut our hair or nails. While some do not eat meat, drink wine, swim or bathe in hot water for the entire three week period, most Ashkenazic Jews are lenient until the nine days between Rosh Chodesh Av and Tisha Bav. This year, Rosh Chodesh Av is on Friday, July 20. As we do not have public displays of mourning on Shabbat, we eat meat and drink wine on Shabbat even during the nine days. Tisha Bav is Saturday night July 28 and Sunday July 29.
