Evaluation First Draft

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

The music videos we researched as our real media texts were:

 Peter Kay’s animated All Star band
 Smash mouth- All star
 Smash mouth- I’m a believer
 Angels and airwaves- call to arms
 Manic street preachers- your love alone

We were going to do intertextuality based around the fact that the song is the Shrek 2 film
but we decided that it would be too hard and there would have been copyright issues.

On the surface we didn’t think much of our album song names but we found that they had a
much heavier meaning than we thought they did.

The camera work in our film was mostly mid shots and close ups and we stuck to that
format because after analysing the videos as previously mentioned we realised that that
was just the conventions of a music video.

We had to change Jack and Pauls costumes because what they were wearing didn’t look
right for the part.

Our lighting was inconsistent due to the fact that we were having to film on different days
due to bad planning.

On the whole we decided to develop the conventions of our genre because we felt that any
alternative that we could have come up with wouldn’t of created as good as brand image
than if we had stuck to the conventions.
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think in some place we were successful but in other places there were mistakes and
inconsistencies. All of our products have a brightness about them and they are all
upbeat. Both of us based our posters on the front of our album cover. We decided we
didn’t want to use a picture of the band members as the front cover because we didn’t
want to go down that route.

To get our target audience we used actors that fitted into our target range (11-19).

‘Accidentally in love’ has been in a film (Shrek 2) which we originally planned on working
around. It was our original idea for the selling point.
