RATIONALE: The Linux operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. and originally developed for Intel x86-based personal computers has eventually turned out as a leading operating system in servers, supercomputers and embedded systems like mobile phones, tablets, network routers, televisions, video game consoles for many a reason like low cost, strong security against attacks by malicious viruses and spywares, flexibility in usage across platforms running different operating systems, compatibility with wide range of free and open source software with nominal customization, convenience in installation and configuration as firewall, file server, backup servers, capability of offering multi-user, multitasking environment in a more efficient, powerful and versatile way compared to the window operating system. Despite the advantages Linux has not been so popular among casual users as it requires proper guidance, diligence and a strong learning curve. However, given the facilities it is essential for the engineering students, researchers and other scientific workers who work or wish to work extensively on problems involving computers and computations. OBJECTIVES AND PREAMBLE: This course is designed to train and develop exclusively the undergraduate and postgraduate students of different branches of engineering and sciences, scientific workers, research scholars of the Indian School of Mines. The program will start with an introduction to Linux operating system and installation procedure followed by basic utilities and applications. Participants will also learn programming in Linux environment, system configuration and administration. Topics like network security, management and maintenance, web programming, POSIX threads and multithreaded programming will also be covered. The topics mentioned above will also have ample hands on exercise and assignments. The certificate course would be conducted by the faculty members of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering along with invited external faculty members. Due emphasis would be given to areas like basic understanding and working knowledge of the Linux operating system, programming aspects, security aspects, system administration, multi-threaded programming in Linux environment. Contemporary audio-visual aids will be used to the maximum feasible extent during all the sessions with due care to make every session as much interactive as possible.
