Network Management System Presentation By Fawad Ali Langah

A network management system (NMS) is a combination of hardware and software used to monitor and administer a computer network or networks. Individual network elements (NEs) in a network are managed by an element management system.

An NMS manages the network elements, also called managed devices. Device management includes faults, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) management.
Management tasks include discovering network inventory, monitoring device health and status, providing alerts to conditions that impact system performance, and identification of problems, their source(s) and possible solutions

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an

"Internet-standard protocol for managing devices on IP networks. Devices that typically support SNMP include routers, switches, servers, workstations, printers, modem racks, and more.
It is used mostly in network management

systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention.
It consists of a set of standards for network management,

including an application layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects.

An NMS employs various protocols to accomplish these tasks. For example, SNMP protocol can be used to gather the information from devices in the network hierarchy.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Network Management Forum divided network management into five functional areas:
Fault Management Configuration Management Security Management Performance Management Accounting Management

Fault ManagementDetect, isolate, notify, and correct

faults encountered in the network. Configuration ManagementConfiguration aspects of network devices such as configuration file management, inventory management, and software management. Performance ManagementMonitor and measure various aspects of performance so that overall performance can be maintained at an acceptable level. Security ManagementProvide access to network devices and corporate resources to authorized individuals. Accounting ManagementUsage information of network resources.
