NIKE is a major publicly traded sportswear and equipment supplier based in the United States. It is the world's leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel and a major manufacturer of sports equipment
As of 2008, it employed more than 30,000 people worldwide.
Originally known as "Blue Ribbon Sports", was founded by University Of Oregon track athlete Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman in January 1964.
In February 1972, BRS introduced its first line of Nike shoes, with the name Nike derived from the Greek goddess of victory The company initially operated as a distributor for Japanese shoe maker Onitsuka Tiger.
Opened its first retail store in 1967 in Santa Monica , California. By 1980, Nike had reached a 50% market share in the U.S. athletic shoe market.
Nikes steady competition in the 1980s was Reebok. To break any similarities they had to began promoting its shoes as fashion accessories.
Nike also manufactures the sports apparels like jerseys and shorts.
