17 The CfC instructors have a genuine desire to share their knowledge with you. Classes are offered on most weekday evenings with a duration of one-to-two hours each session. 17 Class and activity schedules range from single sessions to several weeks. Prices vary depending on the type of class and number of weeks the course is scheduled to meet. 18

The registration process is ongoing with no deadline, and fees are competitive, yet affordable. Class sizes are limited in order to enhance the learning environment and encourage interaction among participants. For those seeking professional acknowledgement, certificates of completion are available upon request. Numerous courses qualify for educator renewal credits. Required documentation is provided. Health and Fitness Series


Trotting Tuesdays [Lovell]
This course does not require riding experience and is taught at Cash Lovell Stables in Winston-Salem on five Tuesday nights. The facility has an indoor riding arena where youll learn the basics of safe and fun English horseback riding. This course is open to beginner level riders of all ages, as well as those who are returning to the saddle. Tuesdays, September 18 - October 23 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. $165

Introduction to Social Ballroom Dancing [Econ]

No experience needed and neither is a dance partner! Come learn the basic introduction dance steps for social dancing. The dance curriculum covers the basic steps for the foxtrot, rumba, waltz, cha-cha and swing. This is great exercise and a way to enjoy social interaction with others. The Beginners Guide to Wine* [Heye]

Why miss out on the joys of wine just because you think it is too hard to understand? Over the last 11 years, Bruce Heye, the Wine Guy, has made hundreds of beginners feel comfortable with making wine selections. This course explores the basics, including how to read a wine label and distinguish the differences between styles and varieties of wine, finishing with a visit to a local winery to learn how wine is made. The Salem College Wine Dinner Wine and Dine at Vin 205 [Heye]
Vin 205 - The Wine Bar opened a year ago and has proven to be a popular spot for wine oriented dinners. Bruce Heye, The Wine Guy, has worked with Chef Harry to plan a delicious dinner with wines. Since this wine bar is attached to the Wine Merchants Gourmet wine shop, you can be assured of a fine selection of wines. Tuesday, November 6 6:30 p.m. $75

Karate and Self-Defense for Women [Geda/Kerr]

This course will teach skills and resources, promote excellence in the martial arts, and encourage building individual and collective strength. This course is designed as an introduction to karate and self-defense for women. The participant will learn the basic moves of traditional Wado-Ryu Karate, 1st kata (a series of movements against an invisible opponent), and the introduction to sparring (kumite). Participants will have the opportunity to earn a yellow belt in WadoRyu Karate by the end of the course. Wear comfortable clothes; a uniform (gi) is available for purchase, but not required. The Wonderful World of Wine Part 1, The New World* [Heye]

In Focus . . . Southern California Wines* [Heye]


Most wine lovers are familiar with the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, but some of Californias best wines are coming from the southern part of the state. Names like Santa Barbara, Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo produce high-quality wine, often at reasonable prices. During two sessions, we will delve into these areas while sampling some of their finest wine varieties and styles. Thursdays, November 29 and December 6 6:30-8:30 p.m. $80 *The Salem College wine series is now allRiedel, and course participants will receive a Riedel glass with a paid registration, excluding the wine dinner. Series participants must be age 21 or older.

The wonderful world of wine is developing rapidly, and this class will explore this growth in North and South America, Africa, the South Pacific countries, and even Asia. The Art and Science of Pairing Wine With Food* [Heye]

Drawing Animal Friends for Young Artists [Verano]

Young artists will learn to capture the spirit of their favorite animals by guided instruction on the how-tos of drawing eyes, mouths, fur, whiskers and more! Students will enjoy lessons for shading, drawing basic shapes and creating textures for their cuddly creatures. Bring to class: reference photos, drawing tablet, #2 pencil, eraser and a colored pencil set. Mondays, September 17, 24 and October 1 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. $60

The Art of Drawing Hands for Teens to Adults [Verano]

Hands show so much expression through very subtle body language. Students will study the principles of foreshortening, and by understanding the hands structurethe shapes created by underlying muscles, tendons and bonesthey will learn how to draw lifelike hands. This is a great class for beginners adults and teensor students preparing their college portfolio. Bring a drawing pad and three pencils: HB, 2B and 4B. Relax and Paint Workshop Option I and II [Verano]

Havent painted in years? If you are an avid painter or just a beginner, you will enjoy this stress-free painting workshop. Each session begins with a short discussion followed by demonstrations to encourage the creative spirit. Students work on their own projects, often choosing photos from family vacations or a collection of reference pictures to create wonderful original works of art. Bring your favorite medium[s]: oil, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, water-soluble oils or any drawing supplies. Class size is limited. Reflections: Drawing and Painting the Illusion of Glass [Verano]


Are you looking for drawing and painting tips that will help you along on your artistic journey? Learning to draw and paint reflections in glassware is a great place to explore art and your creative spirit. Inspiring still-lifes will be practiced with helpful hints on the howto of drawing or painting reflections. From photorealism to abstract, there are many avenues to explore. Learn the practical approach to drawing through step-by-step demonstrations, and capture the likeness of your favorite animal. Students will explore the use of crosshatching, blending, lifting (reverse drawing), shading and much more. With practice and guidance, your animal portraits will come alive. Learn the practical approach to drawing with ink through the eyes of an artist. Students will study the techniques of creating ink lines, markings and washes for achieving realistic results. This course will cover the basics of home orchid Death, he states that our biggest fear is the fear growing and prepare students for a lifetime of of dying. In this three-session course, we will examine our fears around dying and ways we can enjoyment with these marvelous flowers work with these fears. Fall 2012 - Courses for Community Instructor Information


David Bare is the garden columnist for The Winston-Salem Journal and the Greenhouse Manager for Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University, where he maintains an extensive collection of orchids and other tropicals. He is widely known throughout the gardening community for his vast experience and knowledge base in all things garden. Jane Goins is an Appalachian State University graduate with a degree in Spanish. For more than 12 years she has been an ACBL Certified Bridge Instructor. She is listed as a Gold Life Master with more than 3200 Master Points and numerous regional titles Stimp Hawkins is a retired Presbyterian minister and former hospice chaplain. Bruce Heye, The Wine Guy, has been with the Courses for Community program for 11 years. Martha Isenberg is a local tea consultant for Tealightful Inc. She holds degrees from UNCGreensboro in home economics and nutrition education. She is retired after 28 years as a nutrition educator with the NC Cooperative Extension Service.

Mark Mathosian is a freelance writer, columnist and photographer. His work appears in a variety of publications from parenting and business magazines to specialty marketing newspapers. M. Craig Moser, CRPC, Vice President and Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, has 30 years experience in the financial services industry, advising and educating clients. The Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) designation demonstrates that a professional has an in-depth knowledge of an individuals needs, both before and after retirement. He has taught retirement and financial planning courses at universities and technical community colleges in Forsyth and neighboring counties.

Julie Cunningham has experience as a school counselor. She has a bachelors degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a masters degree in counselor education from the University of Virginia. In September 2010, she became an independent education consultant with the goal of helping students and parents navigate the college admission process. She has successfully served a broad range of students who are attending a variety of colleges that match their interests and abilities.

Jennifer L. Stevenson is an award-winning professional writer with more than 25 years experience. Her work has been published more than 2,000 times in newspapers and magazines across the country. A founding member and past president of Winston-Salem Writers, Stevenson has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She is an experienced workshop leader and writing coach. Dana Triplett holds a masters in instructional technology from Appalachian State University and a degree in business administration from Salem College. He is a senior systems analyst for the City of Winston-Salem, teaching employees the how-to of software and hardware. He is an avid technology gadget guru! Vickie Verano has been an art instructor for the Courses for Community program since 1997 and teaches the Summer Art Enrichment Program at Salem College. Adults and children of all ages can participate in a variety of her drawing and painting classes, offered year-round, through the Courses for Community program. Susan Woodring is the author of the novel, Goliath (St. Martins Press, 2012), and a short story collection, Springtime on Mars (Press 53, 2008). Her short fiction has appeared in Isotope, Passages North, Turnrow and Surreal South, among other anthologies and literary magazines. Her work has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and her short fiction was shortlisted for Best American NonRequired Reading 2008 and Best American Short Stories 2010. Susan currently lives in western North Carolina with her children and her husband.
