Project Statement

1. Background The editorial posted by the Washington Post, Meat and Superbugs talks about the controversial issue of using antibiotics in the feed and water supplies of our farm animals. They give their reasons for the need to change the laws and restrictions around antibiotics in livestock to prevent increasingly immune bacteria. 2. Target Audiences Readers of the Washington Post, consumers of livestock food products, livestock producers 3. Objectives The objective of this article is to convince consumers to and producers of livestock products to take larger steps toward creating more strict guidelines for the use of antibiotics in livestock. The goal is to provide awareness to both the producer and consumer of the dangers of widely used antibiotics that create highly resistant bacteria that could spread through the food. 4. Obstacles Many people firmly believe in the governments current regulations regarding this issue. Congress has already turned down propositions to prevent use of some antibiotics. Antibiotics are a core part of medicine and would still be needed when livestock are ill. 5. Key Benefit New studies suggest agricultural antibiotics contribute to the resistance of bacteria and those bacteria can spread to humans through their food. 6. Support Statements/ Reasons Why Although antibiotics are very useful for all kinds of medicine, its use should be limited in agriculture if it means that bacteria will become immune to antibiotics in humans. 7.
