Brief Anatomy of lungs

T he lungs are the vital and major or gans of r espiration T hey are a pair of light, soft, spong y & elastic or gan separ ated by the mediastinum in the thoracic cavity. It is covered by pleural membrane, and has various se gments. T he pleur a membr ane has two layer s i.e. viscer a layer and parietal layer, between the two layer s is a potential space called pleural cavity w hich contains pleur al fluid that helps the pleurae to slide on each other ef for tlessly and reduces friction between the lungs. Each lung has a pulmonar y ar ter y supplying blood to it and two pulmonar y veins dr aining blood fr om it. T he pulmonar y ar ter y are the right and left pulmonar y 2 /1ar teries arising fr om the pulmonar y tr unk at the level 4 /1 8 of the ster nal angle and car r y low-oxygen (Venous)

NERVE SUPPLY
The pulmonary plexuses derive fibres from both the vagi and sympathetic trunk. They supply efferents to the bronchial musculature (sympathetic bronchodilator fibres) and receives afferents from the mucous membrane of the bronchioles and from the alveoli.
