As a result of legislation signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo, Albany County Correctional Facility can now board out of state inmates for a period of up to 24 months. A number of states do not have the capacity to house all of their inmates and therefore must board inmates outside of the state of sentence. This means the County Correctional Facility can now contract to safely board out of state inmates at a daily negotiated rate, providing a consistent revenue stream to the County. This is encouraging news, said Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy. Being allowed to accept out-of-state inmates means new revenue for the county, which has been estimated at $2.4 million per year. On behalf of Albany County taxpayers, I would like to thank Governor Cuomo for giving us access to a much needed potential revenue stream. I would like to also thank Assemblymen Ron Canestrari, Jack McEneny, Bob Reilly, Senator Neil Breslin, as well as Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry, and Senator Mike Nozzolio, for their invaluable assistance as legislative committee chairs. We have a big jail, a professional jail that has room to take in more inmates, said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. Im pleased we will be able to bring more revenue into Albany County. This is a great partnership, said Albany County Legislature Chairman Shawn Morse. Im glad to be a part of the team that made this happen. Both houses of the state legislature signed off on the bill on the last day of the legislative session. ###
