How do Leaders lead-Five Bases of Power (Influence)


Reward power: Promising or granting
rewards.

Coercive power: Threats or actual


punishment.

Legitimate power: Based on position



or formal authority. Expert power: Influence based on being perceived as having important knowledge or skill. Referent power: Power of ones personality (charisma,Expertise,Position).

Leadership Styles
Autocratic Democratic (Participative) Free Rein Situational Leadership

Autocratic Leadership
Autocratic leader takes decisions himself and expects his followers to execute them without any questions. The leader does not delegate authority Suitable in situations when the subordinates are not adequately trained and are unfamiliar with the objectives of the business

Democratic (Participative) Leadership


The democratic leader takes decisions through mutual consensus with his subordinates. The leader delegates authority and is willing to consider suggestions and objections from his followers. Effective in dealing with mature and enlightened subordinates

Free Rein Leadership


The free rein leader gives full freedom to his followers to take decisions and actions, independently. Required when dealing with extremely mature, highly capable and responsible individuals

Situational Leadership
A situational leader studies the overall situation, draws conclusions and adopts leadership style which is most appropriate to the prevailing situation. May act as the dictator at one time and also as a democratic leader on some other occasion.
