leadership
• Leadership is the process of influencing the
behaviour of others towards the goal in a given
situation.
• The person by which a person motivates and guides
the group towards a visualise goal.

influence others.

Leadership style
• Leadership styles refer to a leader’s behavioural pattern.
A leadership style is the result of the leader’s philosophy,
personality and experience and value system. Leadership
styles depend upon the type of followers and the
atmosphere prevailing in the organisation.

Autocratic leadership
• Definition: Autocratic leadership is a management style
wherein one person controls all the decisions and
takes very little inputs from other group members.
Autocratic leaders make choices or decisions based on
their own beliefs and do not involve others for their
suggestion or advice.
Participative leadership
• Participatory leadership as a management style is used
today by a significant number of companies and
organizations. Understanding how it works will allow you,
either as a manager or employee, to better function in an
organization that uses it. Participatory leadership is a
style of management where decisions are made with the
most feasible amount of participation from those who are
affected by the decisions.
Laissez faire leadership
• 3. delegative or free reign Leadership
• Leader gives power to subordinates to make the decisions.
Delegates style is generally not useful.

Theories of leadership
• Trait theory
• Behaviral theory
• Contingency theory
• Situational theory
The Trait approach
• The trait approach arose from the “ Great Man” theory as
a way of identifying the key characteristics of successful
leaders.
Advantages of trait approach
• It is naturally pleasing theory.
• It gives a detailed knowledge and understanding of the
leader element in the leadership process.
Behavioural theory

• The behavioural approach says that anyone who adopts


the appropriate behaviour can be a good leader.
Contingency theory
• In contingency theory of leadership , the success of the leader is
a function of various contingencies in the form of sub
ordinates ,task, and group variables.
• the leaders who are very effective at one place and time may
become unsuccessful either when transplanted to another
situation or when the factors around them change.
• This helps to explain how some leaders who seems for a while
to be extremely successful suddenly appear to go off the boil and
make unsuccessful decisions.
