Part A
3. If your problem is -2+1 then on the number line you move up on space to the right because you are adding a positive 1. When you are adding 2 negatives you move the number to the left because your answer needs to be negative (example: -3+-7 = -10). When you are adding a negative number to a positive you move to the left. An easy way to remember is if the negative number is greater than the positive the answer will be negative and the other way around (-14+1= -13 and 7+(-1)=6).

You always get 0 when adding two numbers with opposite signs. I always think of the subtraction (example -3+3 I think 3-3)

Part B

When a negative counter and a positive counter come together they cancel each other out (see above). Once the two positive and two negative cancel each other out you are left with 2 positive, so you answer is 2.

When a negative and a negative come in counter you simple add them together and keep the negative. There is no canceling.

When adding numbers with different signs you first have to subtract the larger number from the smaller and keep the same sign as the lager number (example: -7+3=-4)

When adding numbers with the same sign is just normal adding but you keep the answer negative or positive ( -6+-4=-10 or 8+1=9 )
