Place Value Chart

A digit’s place in a number is important as it tells us what the digit is worth.

We use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 to make all our numbers.

For example the amount 856 6 signifies 6 (units)

5 signifies 5 (tens)
8 signifies 8 (hundreds)
So 6 + 50 + 800 = 856
Now you can see this example in the place value chart

Using ‘0’ as a place holder

A 0 is both a number and a numeric digit. It is used as a placeholder in a number i.e the number 605 490
is 4 millions, 600 thousands, 0 ten thousands, 5 thousands, 4 hundreds, 9 tens, 0 units
Without the use of a ‘0’ the number would appear 46 549 giving a different value altogether.
