Mean and Range

Mean
To find the Mean in a set of data, add up all the numbers given and divide by
the number of figures there are in the set.
Now try finding the Mean in the sets of numbers below:

a) 2, 4, 4, 7, 9, 8 b) 5, 4, 5, 6, 8, 8

Example functional skills question

1) It is the end of the hockey season and the overall results of the goals scored by three teams are
below
Team A played 6 matches and scored 24 goals
Team B played 7 matches and scored 21 goals
Team C played 5 matches and scored 25 goals
Find the Mean number of goals scored in one match for each team and explain who performed better
and why?

Mean and Range

Range
The Range in a set of data is the difference between the highest and
lowest values.
The easiest way to find the Range is to order the data given from least to
greatest as this makes it easier, especially if you have a large set of data,
then subtract the highest number from the lowest number.
Now try finding the Range in the sets of numbers below:

Note: For this activity the numbers are already in order from lowest to highest

a) 40, 49, 52, 63, 78 b) 4, 7, 7, 9, 10

Range Range

c) 52, 62, 67, 73, 88, 92 d) 19, 23, 26, 26, 29, 30

e) 3, 9, 14, 15, 16, 19 f) 10, 12, 14, 16, 18

Range Range

g) 23, 28, 36, 45, 49, 50 h) 73, 80, 81, 89, 90
