PART I.

M4AL - IIIe - 5: Determines Missing Term/s in a Sequence of Numbers

A. Introduction and Discussion

This is all about determining missing term/s in a sequence of numbers. It also includes
pre-requisite skills in skip counting, factors and multiples of a whole number.
A list of numbers arranged in a row is called a number sequence. Each number in the
sequence is called a term.

B. Illustrative Examples:

7,10,?,16, ?
Look at the sequence of numbers.
What are the missing terms?

To find the missing term/s in a number sequence, we must first look for its pattern.
Look closely to 7,10, ___ and 16, and ____. In number sequence, each term is formed by
adding 3 to the preceding number. So the missing terms are 10 + 3= 13 and 16+ 3= 19.
See to it that the pattern is true to the whole sequence from 7 to 19.

Here is another example of a number sequence.


Find the missing terms: 45,37, 29? 5
The sequence of numbers is in descending order. Get the difference between 45 and
37. In like manner with 37 and 29, the difference is 8. The missing terms are 21 and 13
since 13 is 8 more than the last term which is 5.

The same process will be done to obtain the succeeding terms.

Can you find the pattern or sequence used? _

The numbers inside the squares are multiplied by odd numbers 3,5,7, and 9. Starting with 2 x
3= 6, then
6 x 5= 30, 30 x 7= 210.
210 x 9 = 1890. So the missing number in the last square is 1890.

How about the numbers inside the circles?


The series of numbers inside the circles uses even numbers 2,4,6,8 as factors. So, the missing
number inside the circle is 384 (48 x8).

Note:
To find the missing term/s in a sequence of numbers, remember the following:
1.Determine the order of numbers if it is ascending or descending.
2.Find the difference between the consecutive terms.
3.Determine whether the difference between the terms are all odd, even, multiples of a
number.
4.To find the missing term, use the difference between terms

A. Introduction and Discussion

This is all about finding the missing number in an equation. It also includes pre-requisite
skills involving properties of operations.
Missing numbers are the numbers that got missed in the given series of numbers with
similar
differences among them. The process of writing the missing numbers is termed as finding
similar changes between those numbers and filling their missing values in their specific series
and places.

B. Illustrative Examples:

An equation is a mathematical sentence that states the quality of expressions.


Look at these equations. Could you give the missing number/s?

A. (10 x 2) + (10 x 5) = ___ x (___ + 5)


B. (40 + 5) + (___+ 15) = (__+15) + (40 + 30)

In the first equation, you will use the Distributive Property of Multiplication over
Addition

A. 10 x (2 + 5) = (10 x 2) + (10 X 5)
10 x 7 = 20 + 50
70 = 70
In the second equation, you will use the Commutative Property and Associative
Property of Addition

B. (40 + 5) + (30 + 15) = (5 + 15) + (40 + 30)


45 + 45 = 20 + 70
90 = 90

Note
*Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition- is applied when you
multiply a value by a sum.
* Commutative Property of addition says that changing the order of addends
does not change the sum
* Associative Property of Addition, the sum of three or more numbers remains
the same regardless of how the numbers grouped.
