    In this diagram, can you work out the area of each of the two shaded squares?

    Now compare these two diagrams really carefully. What do you notice about the four triangles in each of the diagrams?

    What do you notice about the whole area of each of the two diagrams?

    Can you use this information to work out the area of the square in the second diagram?

    Now can you use what you just figured out to work out the length of the longest side of this right-angled triangle?

    Now do exactly the same thing with these two diagrams

    and use the information you get to work out the length of the longest side of this right-angled triangle:

    Find the missing side of each of these triangles. If the answer is not a whole number or a fraction, give your answer as the square root of a whole number or a fraction. If there is a letter for a side, give the answer in terms of the letter:
