Journal Prompt 2: The Writing Life

For your second journal prompt, youre going to show me that you can think critically about your own reading and writing lives. Make sure to read the instructions all the way through. DUE: Wednesday, September 12th, by 11:59PM

Read Rigid Rules and the Stifling of Language. Read the essay closely, and remember the critical thinking process. Jot questions in the margins. Underline key words. This will be a difficult essay, but this is representative of the way in which writing is actually studied and discussed in the academic world. Then brainstorm a list of every writing rule that you can think of, from the simple to the elaborate, from the useful to the mundane (i.e., Dont ever use contractions in an academic essay, or Dont ever use the words There is/was/are to start a sentence). Try to remember from whom you originally heard the rule, and whether you have ever attempted to follow the rule. Bring the list to class on Wednesday, as it will serve as a discussion point; remember to print out and bring the entire journal article as well. Come to class ready and eager to discuss the reading. By Wednesday, September 12th, 11:59PM, post this list of writing rules to your blog and write a response in which you discuss your own personal experiences with writing rules. Which work for you? Which are too rigid and stifling? Your post (NOT including the list of writing rules) should be a minimum of 500 words. You should also be quoting from the article
