Colloquy VIII:

Neverwhere
by Neil Gaiman (1996)
Spring 2011

*Due 3/22 by 11:59pm (Tuesday evening)

**Please read through directions closely, there are a few added things in this assignment.

What To Do:
1. Read the first chapter of Gaiman’s Neverwhere (provided for you on Blackboard).
2. As you are reading, pinpoint at least two rhetorical devices from those that we have dealt with thus far:
o Anachronism
o Prosopographia
o Peristasis
o Ecphonesis
o Deesis
o Dialect
o Apophasis
o Anacoenosis
o Topographia
o Litotes
o Auxesis
o Ellipsis
o Epiplexis
3. Create a post on the Colloquy of no fewer than 300 words in which you write Chapter 2 of Neverwhere.
In your post you should use three rhetorical devices – two being those that you pinpointed from the text
itself in addition to one more from the list above (that may or may not be found in Gaiman’s writing).
Your post should maintain a similar tone to that of Gaiman’s, as well as continue the story that he has
set up (meaning do not create an entire new story).
4. You will then respond to your own post, noting which three rhetorical devices you used and why.
5. You must also respond to two Colloquy authors’ posts. Please note that just stating something along the
lines of, “Your use of ___________ was really effective,” is not a significant comment. If you believe
their use of the rhetorical device is effective, how and why is it?
6. You must also boldface your use of rhetorical devices in your posts.
Accompanying Video
This book is a novelization of a TV series that Gaiman wrote. The below clip shows you part of what you will
