Writing Assignments/Projects for Animal Farm

1. Create a piece of propaganda for Napoleon’s or Snowball’s campaign. What

images and words would you include? How will your piece capture the attention
of people on both sides of the issue? Remember propaganda can include a
variety of different mediums. Which medium do you think will be most effective
on the farm or are you targeting neighboring farms?

2. Read the poem “Crow’s Song” by Margaret Atwood and respond with your own
creative piece. Your piece should also be from the point of view of an animal
commenting on humanity. You may choose poetry or short story (no more than
two pages please) as your genre, and you can make the piece either positive or
negative.

3. Read the related reading “The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union” at the back of
the novel. Create an annotated bibliography for the reading. Remember an
annotated bibliography may have one or two parts of quotes integrated into the
summary, and it is strictly no more than one page.

4. Explain how Animal Farm can been seen as a fable even though it does not
have a moral stated at the end. Provide a moral of your own and explain it in
terms of the novel.

5. Remember Orwell’s subtitle is “A Fairy Story.” Explain how the novel fits this
subtitle, citing supporting details.
