Activity 4: Read the following sample script presentation based on Animal Farm
Literary work and focus on the highlighted words.

To start with, I’ve chosen to talk about excerpt A. And now I'm going to start by introducing this
astonishing literary novel. Animal Farm was written by George Orwell who was born in India in 1903
but lived most of his life in England. He lived in the war context before and during Second World
War and his ideology in the face of it was socialism. This is reflected in this satirical novel, as it deals
with the criticism of the Soviet regime in a humorous way by representing people with animals.

Well, the chosen excerpt belongs to chapter 3 of the novel Animal Farm. It begins with a message
spoken by Benjamin the donkey, in which he says that there was nothing worth reading even he
knew perfectly all the alphabet. The theme of the excerpt in essence is the learning process of the
written language by Clover, Boxer or Mollie. So, here we can see the pitfalls some animals had in
learning the alphabet and the solutions they made about it. Boxer handled those troubles by
creating solutions, for instance: writing the letters 1 or 2 times a day so as not to forget them. In
addition, this excerpt mentions Snowball, who provided a solution for all those animals as they
didn’t understand the rules of the farm that solution consisted in summarizing the 7
commandments into just one. Previous to this excerpt, it’s mentioned that Snowball took over the
organization of the animal committee, and what happens after this excerpt is the questioning of
some animals about the actions that the pigs were doing. It’s in this excerpt that a type of conflict
begins to develop because after the rebellion, there was disorganization among the animals, and
some of them didn’t want to collaborate. Therefore, it’s deduced that there’s a conflict between
individual vs. society. This excerpt is very substantive for the novel because it emphasizes the
principles of Animalism, this term is a reference to socialism, as it’s an ideology that seeks the
welfare of all animals. However, we can see that the leaders of that begin to have selfish attitudes.
To sum up, this excerpt represents the problems that would develop later in the work, as it narrates
some of the difficulties that the animals had after the rebellion took place.

On the whole, I cherished this passage since it demonstrates the learning process had the animals
on the farm and the way that we can call the shots to acquire many skills that we initially thought
we would never gain. Furthermore, one of the reasons I have chosen the extract is because the
author relates the difficulties the Soviet people had in applying their ideology to animals that didn’t
know the alphabet, thus showing that the Soviet regime was lackluster.
