1. Read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (ISBN 978 0679745587) (Make sure you
order this copy IN PRINT, as all class discussions and writings will be based on
page #references to this edition) ALL BOOKS FOR IB COURSE MUST BE THE
ISBN INDICATED, PRINT COPIES!!
2. Write a universal theme statement for the non-fiction novel. (Follow the four
steps for finding theme, listed below.) Another way to think about Universal
Theme Statement is to think about the most significant idea of the novel. (As
you read the novel , pay attention to this first step, as the theme is identifiable
as you read the text. )
1. Summarize the plot of the novel in 2-3 sentences.
2. Pick a one word theme word that connects to the plot.
3. Write a sentence stating what the novel says about that theme word.
4. Make that sentence universal.
Example based on Little Red Riding Hood:
1. Little Red Riding Hood is a children´s fairy tale that tells the story
about a young girl who gets duped by a wolf as she attends to her sick
grandmother.
2. Instinct
3. Little Red Riding Hood realizes that she needs to trust her instinct that
something was wrong as she notices so many changed features in her
grandmother.
4. This story explores how people need to be aware of dangers and trust
that “little voice” that warns them of danger.
3. Complete the following for each part of the novel (it is divided into 4
parts)
● Pick a quotation that connects to your universal theme statement
from the chapter (Any length between a sentence and a paragraph.)
and write a paragraph explaining its context (who said it? to whom?
when? why?), significance (why is it important to the book a whole?),
and connection to your universal theme statement.
4. For one section of the novel
● you will pick another quotation from any chapter (1-3 sentences)
that shows the use of a literary device (including but not limited to:
diction, tone, syntax, imagery, detail, symbolism, irony, dialect)

literary device on conveying the theme

a Word document or Google Doc and saved as (Your last name)-Summer Assignment.
The assignment should be submitted to the assignment set in Google Classroom by
9:00 AM Thursday September 7, 2023, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE CLASS THAT
