Hookah

It is purely of Indian origin. It is also called waterpipe or hubble bubble. The tobacco smoke is drawn through the water in the base of the hookah which cools & filters the smoke.

Hookli

It is a clay pipe of short stem with a mouthpiece & a bowl. Commonly used in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat.

Reverse Smoking

Tobacco is smoked with the lightened end inside the mouth. Air is supplied to the burning zone through the unlighted end of the cigarette or through the mouth. Dhumti & chutta are commonly used in reverse smoking

Smokeless Tobacco
The various forms used in India are:-

Khaini
It is powdered sun-dried tobacco,slaked lime-paste mixture occasionally used with arecanut. It is simply placed in the mouth or chewed. The ingredients are vigorously mixed with the thumb & is

placed in the premolar region of the mandibular groove.

Mainpuri Tobacco
Ingredients:tobacco,slaked lime,finely cut arecanut,camphor & cloves. A high prevalence of oral cancer & leukoplakia among persons who used mainpuri tobacco have been found.

Mawa Ingredients: thin shavings of arecanut,tobacco & slaked lime. It is usualy wrapped in cellophane paper & tied in the shape of a small ball. Before consumption the packet is rubbed vigorously to mix the contents & the mixture is chewed until it becomes softer after which it is transferred to the mandibular groove.

Mishri/masheri It is prepared by roasting tobacco on a hot metal plate until it is uniformly black. It is then powdered & used primarily to clean teeth

Paan The most common habit of smokeless tobacco usage in india. Paan refers to the betel leaf itself & often to the quid. The quid contains arecanut,lime obtained from limestones or seashells & may include aniseed,catechu,cardamom,cin namon,coconut,cloves,sugar &tobacco wrapped in betel leaf.

Snuff Contains finely powdered air cured & fire cured tobacco leaves. Bajjar is a dry snuff used by about 14% of the woman in Gujarat. It is carried in a metal container. A twig is dipped into it & applied over the tooth & gingiva.

Zarda Tobacco leaf is boiled in water along with lime & spices until evaporation. The residual tobacco is then dried & coloured with dyes. It is chewed

Gutka Preparation of crushed betel nut , tobacco , & sweet flavorings.

Paan masala It is a mixture of betel leaf with lime, arecanut , clove , cardamom, mint , tobacco , essence in the form of granules.

Gudakhu It is a paste of powdered tobacco , molasses 7 other ingredients primarily used to clean the tooth. Used predominantly by women in bihar.
