The INDUCTOR DESIGN

*Inductor *Energy

is an energy storing device that stores kinetic energy by the virtue of current flowing through it. is stored in the form of magnetic field.

*Inductor *To

consists physically of a winding & a magnetic core. design an inductor, the electrical & magnetic parameters should be related to select core, winding gauge, no of windings etc.

DESIGN :

Step 1: (inductor value)

calculated.

* The value of the inductor has to be * This is done based on the circuit

topology where the inductor is used.

Step 2: (Area product, Ap)

The product of core cross sectional area ( Ac ) & window area (A w) is defined as area product (Ap ). Based on the ENERGY to be handled by the inductor core, the area product is given as, 2E L Ap =A w *A c = K w K c JB m

Ap =A w *A c =

Step 3: PERMEANCE ( )
It is the property of the core material which allows the flow of flux through it. Permeance is the reciprocal of reluctance (R or S) & is given by,

uo ur Ac
l m + ur lg

Step 4: NUMBER OF TURNS

The permeance is related to the inductance & the no of turns as,

= L/N

Re-arranging the above equation, one obtains, L N = \ v

Step 5: GAUGE OF WIRE

The cross section of the wire (a) can be calculated as, I rms a= J I rms = rms value of the current flowing through the inductor

J = current density

Step 6: AVAILABLE WINDOW AREA CHECK

*The inequality A w K w

> aN should be satisfied.

*If not repeat the calculations for the no of turns & gauge of wire after choosing another core.
