Q.1(a) What is the principal of EDTA titration? Describe the estimation of hardness of water by EDTA method.

(b)One gram of CaCO3 was dissolved in dilute HCl and the solution diluted to one litre. 50 ml of this required 45 ml of EDTA solution while 50 ml of hard water sample required 18 ml of EDTA soln . On the other hand 50 ml of boiled water consumed 9 ml of the EDTA soln . Find out temporary , permanent and total hardness of the water sample in ppm of CaCO3 equivalent. OR (a) Describe the disinfection of water and explain the break point chlorination with diagram. (b) A sample of water on analysis was found to contain the following impurities : Ca(HCO3)2 = 10 ppm,Mg(HCO3)2 = 12 ppm, MgCl2 = 2ppm,CaSO4= 10 ppm, NaCl = 2 ppm. Calculate the temporary and permanent hardness in mg/lit and 0Cl. (3+3) Q.2 Describe lime soda method for softening of water. Explain the advantage of the process and chemistry involved in it. OR Explain the Zeolite process for removal of hardness of water and describe its merits over lime soda process. Q.3 Write short notes on any three of the following (a) Caustic Embrittlement (b)Units of hardness (c)Boiler Corrosion (d)Sedimentation with Coagulation (e)Sand Filter (Diagram) (f)Degree of hardnesss
