CONCEPT PAPER

SCOPE OF S-III PROJECT UNDER REVISED PC-I

The project encompasses the transmission of flowing sewage in Lyari and Malir River Basin through
underground RCC Conduit and its treatment at Sewage Treatment Plants, before its ultimate
disposal into the sea. Vide Revised PC-I of “Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan S-III Project” following
works were envisaged to be executed in Malir & Lyari River Basin along with enhancement and
construction of Treatment Plants:

 Malir Trunk Sewer : 05 Contract Packages with overall length of 22.74 KM

 Lyari Trunk Sewer : 08 Contract Packages with overall length of 33.32 KM
 Upgradation & Capacity Enhancement of Sewage Treatment Plant at Haroonabad
SITE from 51 to 100 MGD.
 Upgradation & Capacity Enhancement of Sewage Treatment Plant at Mauripur
from 54 to 180 MGD.
 Construction of New Sewage Treatment Plant at Korangi of 180 MGD.

SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT NO. III AT MAURIPUR

Existing TP-III is situated at Mauripur, Karachi
(24˚ 51’ 40” N - 66˚ 57’ 08” E). The treatment
plant was designed by Balfours Engineering
Consultants from United Kingdom (UK) and
constructed by China Petroleum Engineering
Construction Corporation for hydraulic
capacity of 54 MGD in 1998 which was
operational for 10 years with gradual
reduction in treatment capacity.

TP-III is located on the shore of Lyari Estuary,

in the northeast of Karachi. Part of the site area has been reclaimed from the sea. The treatment
plant covers an area of 300 acres of land. It is 3,500 meters long from east to west, and 700 meters
wide from south to north. Based on the topographic features and treatment process the existing
plant is divided into two parts east and west. The sewage flows from Lyari Trunk Sewer to Mauripur
Trunk Sewer and then finally comes into Mauripur Sewage Treatment Plant.

Existing TP-III consists of Main Pumping Station, Raw Sewage Channels, Inlet Works, Secondary
Pumping Station, Anaerobic Lagoons, Facultative Lagoons, General Pumping Station and Sludge
Drying Lagoons.

Upon completion of Stage-I of works under S-III Project current treatment facility consisting of
lagoons have been upgraded from 54 MGD to 77 MGD, after completion of Stage-II works, another
103 MGD will be treated under new Trickling Filter process, thus making the overall treatment
capacity of 180 MGD at TP-III.

The Stage-I works at TP-III is completed well within the awarded cost of Rs. 1,512.60 Million.
