PROJECT HISTORY:
To meet the requirements of irrigation in Malakand valley and district Mardan and
Swabi, an irrigation scheme was planned by the British Government in 1903. The
plan consists of headwork at Amandara near Batkhela on River upper Swat,
unlined irrigation channel 7.2 Km long up to Malakand Pass and excavation of
17.5 Ft dia, 3.4 Km long tunnel underneath of Malakand Pass. A network of
irrigation canals including Abazi and Machai branches and their distributaries were
also part of the project. The project started in 1907 and completed in 1914.
In 1930, a hydropower project was planned by British Government, at Jabban, 10
Km of Dargai town Malakand Agency. For this purpose a free power tunnel called
Barkat tunnel was excavated on the right side of the outlet regulator of Benton
tunnel. The length of tunnel is 0.97 Km and its diameter is about 14 feet. The
discharge capacity of Barkit tunnel is 1200 cusecs. Jabban hydro power projects
was started in 1934 and completed in 1937.
After successful commissioning and operation of Jabban Power Station, an idea
was proposed that if the water from the Tail Race of Jabban Power Station is led to
Dargai, sufficient head could be produced large enough to produce electric power
of 20 MW. To give practical shape to this idea, in 1948 another power projects was
planned at Dargai Malakand Agency which completed in 1952

DIFFERENT PARTS OF PROJECT:

 Bazai Irrigation Scheme
 Sediment Excluder
 Penstock
 Spillway Chute
 Power Station
BAZAI IRRIGATION SCHEME:
Bazai Irrigation Project was initially conceived as a lift Irrigation Scheme in 1992.
Land of Bazai valley was proposed to be irrigated through pumping from
Shamozai Disty. Construction of Malakand-III HPP at a higher altitude made it
possible to command the Bazai area through gravity flow. Feasibility study was
conducted in the year 2003-04. Based on feasibility study original PC-I amounting
to Rs. 1599.84 (M) was approved by ECNEC on 21-08-2006. Due to high cost of
consultancy and land acquisition, revised PC-I for Rs. 1762.62 millions was got
approved from ECNEC on 30-03-2009. Consultancy services were awarded to M/S
BAK and Ages Consultants (JV), Peshawar, on 15-12-2008. Phase-I of the
Consultancy services for “survey, investigations and detailed design” commenced
on January 01-, 2009 and has been completed on 28th Feb, 2010. For construction,
the project was divided into three packages namely A, B & C. Project estimate for
all the packages were framed on CSR 2009 & prevailing market rate

FIG I
SALIENT FEATURES:
Bazai Irrigation Scheme will irrigate 25,000 acres of Malakand Division and
Mardan,
 20,000 acres for Mardan
 5,000 acres for Malakand
In FIG II Basically these water taken from
sediment excluder of Up stream Canal and
provide for irrigation purpose,
These water contain minerals so for irrigation
purpose these are good,

FIG II

PENSTOCK:
A penstock is a sluice or gate or intake structure that controls water flow, or an
enclosed pipe that delivers water to hydro turbines and sewerage systems.
Penstock tunnel is 203 meter long,

FIG III
SPILLWAY CHUTE:
A spillway is a structure used to provide the
controlled release of flows from a dam or levee into
a downstream area, typically the riverbed of the
dammed river itself
Spillways ensure that the water does not overflow
and damage or destroy the dam.
Other uses of the term "spillway" include bypasses
of dams or outlets of channels used during high
water.

FIG IV

SEDIMENT EXCLUDER:
Sediment excluder is used at the headwork of a canal for preventing excess
sediment from entering the off‐taking canal.
It will push down a sediment which have specific gravity greater than 2.6,

FIG V
FIG VI
HYDRO POWER STATION:
THE Malakand-III hydropower project is located in dargai malakand division. It is
third HPP in Dargai that,s why called him Malakand III Hydropower project

FIG VII

FACTS:
1. First ever Power Station Constructed by KP itself (PEDO).
2. First to use SCADA system (Supervisory control and data acquisition) in
Pakistan.
