AIR BREAK CIRCUIT BREAKER:

Air break circuit breaker uses air at NTP as arc-extinguisher. During fault conditions, operating mechanism actuates CB and contacts get opened. As contacts open arc is struck between arcing contacts due to ionisation of air. Arc runners then increase the length of arc. Its length is further increased and it gets cooled in arc splitters made up of porcelien. R l. Hence arc resistance increases making voltage drop across the arc more than supply voltage. Finally arc gets extinguished. AC circuits have current zeroes making arc extinction easier. Air break CB are used for circuits upto 12 kV.
