Vocab Chapter 40 May 17, 2010 Preadaptation- is adaptations in an ancestral group that allow a shift to new functions which

are later favored by natural selection. Tadpoles- are swimming, tailed larvae. Mucous gland- supply a lubricant that keeps the skin moist in air. Pulmonary circulation- carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. Systematic circulation- carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body and back to the heart. Pulmonary respiration- is respiration through the lungs. Cutaneous respiration- is respiration through the skin. Duodenum- is the upper portion of the small intestine. Ileum- is the coiled middle portion of the small intestine. Mesentery- is a membrane resembling plastic wrap, and holds the small intestine in place. Vent- is where waste materials exit the body. Nictitating membrane- is a transparent movable membrane covering the eyes. Tympanic membrane- (ear drum) is by which sounds are transmitted to the inner ear. Columella- a small bone that extends between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear.
