The Royal Courts of Justice in The Strand are an icon of the Gothic Revival of the late 19th century. They were designed by George Edmund Street (1824-81), one of eleven architects all of whom sent in Gothic designs in 1866; Street was selected as sole architect in 1868. Construction began in 1871 and the building was finished in 1882, a year after its architect's death. Street paid particular attention to the allied building crafts, particularly metal work, and personally drew out most details. The exterior adapts mid-13th century English and French styles. The sumptuous Central Hall, 230 by 82 feet has been described as 'the grandest secular room of its style'. The tour, limited to 30 places will be led by the Master's cousin, The Hon Mr. Justice (Sir Gary) Hickinbottom, Queen's Bench Liaison Judge for the Northern and South Eastern Circuits: a man who loves his workplace, and has personally researched the chronicle and quirks of its remarkable history. We should present ourselves at the main entrance in The Strand from 4.15 pm, go through Security and wait in a group in the Central Hall. The tour will end at 6.30pm. Following the tour, the Master invites members and their guests to join him at a local Wine Bar for light refreshment (not included in the ticket price) The ticket price will be 15, which includes a donation to the charity 'Court Based Personal Support'.
