Have children look at the pictures. Ask: Which is the flag for our country? Have Instruction children circle the United States flag in blue. Direct them to the bottom row of images. Then ask: Which symbols belong to California? Have them circle the California symbols in red. 2 Review symbols with children. Ask: Which is your favorite symbol? Then have them illustrate and write what they like about that symbol. Take children to the library media center. Research the state bird in books or online, noting the birds name, color, size, and habitat. Work with children to chart the information you have learned. Have children draw and label the bird using the chart for reference.

California has many symbols. One symbol is a stone bear. It was made by some of the first people in California.

Instruction Tell children that the chipped stone bear is Californias State Prehistoric Artifact. Explain

that prehistoric means the time before people started to write about history. Artifacts are primary sources and when we write about them, we are creating a secondary source. Have children pose relevant questions about the artifact. Then have them color the picture of the bear and write one word to tell about it. Symbols 16T5

Instruction Have children color and cut out the symbols. Have them paste the symbols on a separate sheet of paper placing the state symbols on the top half of the paper and the national symbols on the bottom half of the paper.
