A pioneer in the development of alternative learning for a modern world, Union Institute & University has spent nearly

50 years at the forefront of adult education. Founded in 1964 as The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education (UREHE), Union Institute & University began as a consortium of 10 liberal arts schools in the Northeastern United States. With the participation of such institutions as Antioch College, Bard College, Sarah Lawrence College, Goddard College, and Hofstra University, the UREHE developed into an important resource for nontraditional learning, focusing on innovative methods of lowresidency and interdisciplinary education. In 1969, the UREHE was renamed the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities (UECU) and subsequently became a degree-granting institution, licensed by the Ohio Board of Regents and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Reorganized in the 1980s, the UECU took its present shape as Union Institute & University and today offers high-quality educational programs for working adults, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs.
