PTA: from Questions to Understanding

PTA, Membership, and Volunteering

Why the PTA?

The PTA, Parent Teacher Association, is the largest child advocacy association in the United States. PTA has been around since 1897, more than 100 years. Not many organizations last this long! BLE PTA is a non-profit organization that belongs to the Michigan PTA, which, in turn, is a part of the National PTA.

What does my joining the PTA really mean to Bailey Lake Elementary?

There is power in numbers. The PTA supports and speaks on behalf of the children not only at school but in the community, the government, and other organizations. When you join the PTA, you are adding one more voice in support of your school and your student. BLE PTA is dedicated to making this school the best environment for educating our students. By joining, you are endorsing the activities the PTA provides to all children. No. By joining the PTA you are not signing up to volunteer. You show your support for the PTA programs and other activities even if you dont have time to be physically present. However, if you would like to volunteer, you will be most welcome! Any time you can volunteer is greatly appreciated. It is all vital to achieving the goals of the PTA and the school community. Even one hour a school year is of a benefit!

If I join the PTA, do I have to volunteer?

What if I can only volunteer once in a while?

Do I have to come to school to volunteer?

No. There are many activities that can be done away from the school and are of a great benefit to our programs and events.

I am signed up as a volunteer; does that make me a member of the PTA? If I join the PTA, do I have to attend the PTA meetings?

No, you are not a PTA member unless you pay dues, but your help as a volunteer is greatly appreciated. No. We encourage you to attend as many meetings as you can to learn what is going on in school and to help shape PTA priorities; however, you are not required to attend meetings.

From Our PTA President

Dear Bailey Lake Families, During the recent Parent Advisory Team meeting led by Dr. Rock, Clarkston Schools Superintendent, came a question of our schools secret for such an overwhelming success of the School Fair. Year after year it is bringing joy to the children as well as considerable funds for numerous classrooms enhancements, enrichment programs, and fun events. What IS our secret?

When considering such a multi-focused endeavor as the School Fair, Id say that the recipe for success rests on the vision of one, drive of a few, dedication of many, and participation of all. While Julie Belliveau and the fair chairs team were the guiding forces behind the scene, it was the last ingredient that noticeably stood out. I truly believe there wasnt a family at Bailey Lake that didnt participate in this event. Whether you donated a Silent Auction or raffle basket item or cash, sold raffle tickets, spent days or just an hour in preparation and volunteering at the Fair, or just came in for the fun - you did contribute to what others perceive as an undeniable success and togetherness of our school. An estimated $19,000 was raised for our children; yet, the true indicators of success were the sense of belonging and the smiles on the little faces! A BIG thank you to all! Speaking of fairs, another fair of a different nature is fast approaching. All families are invited to attend The Magic of a Moment Art Fair, on November 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as a jump start to the Reflections week.

Under the guidance of art teacher Amy O-Staszak, children have created their artistic visions of this years National PTA contest theme. KidsArt Fairs, the program facilitator, will frame and display the artwork for everybody to enjoy. If you choose to purchase your childs framed art, part of the cost will go to the PTA fund. Last but not least, Halloween classroom parties and parade are just a few days away. They are exciting and highly anticipated events at any grade. Thank you, room parents, for finding time to make the parties as memorable and enjoyable as they always are!

Reflections The Magic of Art

We are excited to announce two new events that will take place at BLE in conjunction with the National PTA Reflections program to encourage students creativity in interpreting the theme, The Magic of a Moment... This year the Reflections art contest is coming to our school in a new form: Reflections Week and Art Fair! Reflections Week: November 12-16, 2012 During Reflections week, the teachers will work with the students on their conceptual understanding of a magic moment necessary for all contests categories. For grades 1-5, the emphasis in the classrooms will be made on writing of a short story that represents this moment in lives of students themselves or fictional characters. Children will have to complete their stories at home and bring the finished work to school to enter the contest in Literature category. ART FAIR: November 13, 2012 Under the guidance of Amy O-Staszak, BLE Art Teacher, our children have already been creating their artistic interpretations of The Magic of a Moment... Their artwork will be proudly displayed during the Art Fair brought to our school by KidsArt Fairs company. All creations will have the option of being framed and matted as well! Forms for the Reflections entrys submission in Visual Arts category will be available for interested participants. More updates about the Art Fair are coming home soon. For those new to Reflections, this is a nation-wide creative contest for K-12 students that starts at local schools, continues at the state level, and finishes at the national one. Your student can participate in Reflections by creating and submitting entries in Visual Arts, Literature, Music, Photography, Dance Choreography, and Film/ Video Production categories. Student entry forms and guidelines can be found on-line at the BLE web site under PTA /Reflections. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, November 20, 2012. Although the Reflections Program follows a contest format, its ultimate goals are participation and appreciation for the arts. Join the BLE PTA in encouraging your child to become a part of this highly regarded program! If you have any questions, please contact us via e-mail at ninabrown65@yahoo.com or arinabokas@aol.com. Thank you, Nina Brown and Arina Bokas

THANK YOU
Fair Volunteers!
What a day it was! Full of laughter, smiles and a bit of fun for everyone. Our annual School Fair is not only the PTAs main fundraiser of the year, but is also a day that creates memories for our kids that last for many years to come. We could not have made this day happen without our volunteers. We need approximately 150 volunteers to make this day a success and I cannot thank all of you enough for helping us out. Our volunteers come from many placesour staff and teachers, our parents, our grandparents, our Bailey Lake Alumni who love coming back to help, our Middle School, Jr. High and High school students, our boy scouts, our girl scouts and even our current students who never seem to hesitate to jump in and help out! Our volunteers helped in many waysour committee chairs who organized and ran the specific main events in the fair, those who rallied for basket donations, those who helped put the baskets together, those who helped set up on Friday, those who helped during the fair, those who helped clean up after the fair, those who are still cleaning up the loose ends, those who didnt formally volunteer but jumped in to help as they realized we needed it, and those who worked longer than their scheduled shift because they knew we needed the help. And thank you to all who showed flexibility by jumping in where ever you were needed as things changed throughout the day. As the Volunteer Coordinator for the Fair, in the days leading up to it I often wonder how it will all come together. But, it always does and that is because of YOU! Thank you all for your help in making this day a giant success. And, thank you for making my job easier! Our Bailey Lake kids are so lucky to have you!!
