THE

AT
WORK
ASHOKAS NETWORK EXISTS TO GROW THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS AND GET US CLOSER
TO AN EVERYONE A CHANGEMAKER
TM
WORLD. ASHOKA FELLOWS HIGHLIGHT THE FOLLOWING AS THE
MOST SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS THEY GET FROM THE NETWORK:
Fellows see themselves
as leading social
entrepreneurs.
Ashoka is a homecoming
for social entrepreneurs
who have been
homeless. There is no
better community that
understands and celebrates
their commitment to
cause, or the loneliness of
leadership.
Mary Gordon, Canada,
elected in 2002
Fellows now fully grasp
the transformative
potential of their idea
and seek to change
norms in their eld,
at a national or
continental level.
While I had been thinking
broadly about exploring
scale prior to becoming
an Ashoka Fellow, it was
through the induction
process that I came to really
understand, and be able to
articulate, a vision for my
organization - the vision
that one day every child in
America would get to play
every day. I think the very
simplicity of the statement
belies an extraordinarily
complex understanding of
the world of changemaking
that Ashoka uniquely brings
to bear in its dealings with
Fellows all around the world.
Jill Vialet, USA,
elected in 2004
Fellows belong to a
trusted community
that shares resources
and gives them
unconditional
acceptance.
The engaged global
community of social
entrepreneurs that Ashoka
has fostered helps each one
of them to have more impact
than would have been
possible individually.
Pierre Omidyar,
eBay founder
Ashoka curates
introductions across
elds to thought leaders,
funders, business
entrepreneurs, pro-bono
partners and others to
help Fellows scale their
impact.
Ashoka has been an
unparalleled connector.
For example, Ashoka's
Twin Cities team was
instrumental in helping me
scale my work in Minnesota
by introducing me to
partners such as Twin Cities
Healthy Start and a number
of other local changemaking
organizations.
Kathryn Hall-Trujillo, USA,
elected in 2007.
Fellows gain visibility
through Ashokas
brand and partnerships
with news outlets and
high prole national
convenings.
Certainly as a positive
outcome of Ashokas
support, I was fortunate to
do an interview with Poppy
Harlow of CNNMoney about
our MicroConsignment
Model.
Greg Van Kirk, Guatemala/
USA, elected in 2008
Ashoka provides some
Fellows with a modest
stipend during the rst
three years of their
fellowship, based on
need, to ensure they can
focus full-time on their
work.
When Ashoka elected me a
Fellow in November 2006,
I had been working part-
time to implement my
vision for ve years. Ashoka
gave me a stipend that
allowed me to reduce the
burden of my own student
loans, cover my basic
expenses, and fully dedicate
myself to scaling Lumni.
Felipe Vergara,
Colombia/USA, elected in
2006
Ashoka identies trends
based on a critical mass
of Fellows work and
engages entrepreneurs
in shaping the next
paradigm for their elds.
The only thing more
powerful than an innovative
idea in the hands of an
entrepreneur aiming to
change the world, is a
group of innovators coming
together and collaborating.

Jill Vialet wants to ensure every child in America gets to play every day.
She founded Playworks to remake play in schools across the country
by providing them with a full-time "coach" who organizes games and
other structured activities during recess and after school programs.
Playworks increases physical activity, reduces bullying, and improves
the school and learning environment.
