To Parent(s) and Guardian(s), The students in Legal Studies 10/20/30 have worked very hard at exploring Canadian and Albertan Law in theory through research, case studies, projects, films, and text books. Many students have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the field of law in the future. On May 29, 2012, students are going to have the opportunity to go the The Court of Queens Bench Provincial Court House to see this amazing career field in practice instead of theory. The address of the court house is 601 5th Street SW, Calgary Alberta. They will be given the opportunity to explore the court house, attend one or two (time depending) actual court proceedings in the open court rooms, and view the Law Library. This will be a selfguided tour with myself and one other teacher directing the tour. We will be taking Calgary Public Transit to and from the site. Itinerary: 8:45 students will meet in the rotunda to review trip expectations 9:00 - students and teachers will walk to the bus stop at Northbound 44Street at 11 Avenue SE. 9:16-9:44 catch bus #26, transfer at Marlborough Station, take c-train #202 to the 7Avenue at 4Street SW station. 9:45 walk to the court house 10:00-10:30 tour the general court house 10:30 11:30 attend one to two court proceedings in open court rooms 11:30 12:00 lunch in the Cafeteria 12:00 12:35 tour the Law Library 12:45 gather in front of the court house and walk to the bus stop at 7Avenue at 4Street SW 1:01 1:33 catch bus #1 to 17Avenue at 44Street SE. 1:33 1:55 walk back to Forest Lawn High School and do a short debrief. Lunches will not be supplied so students must bring their own bagged lunch. There is a Cafeteria where students can choose to purchase food if they would like. The cost of this trip is bus fare ($1.75 each way). If students have a public transit pass or bus tickets, they can bring that instead of the money. It is important to know that security to enter the court house is very similar to that of an airport (metal detectors, physical searches as deemed necessary). Students must not have any sharp or metal objects on them as they will be confiscated by security (this includes utensils for lunch). If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail or call me. Stacey Mee Legal Studies teacher smmee@cbe.ab.ca or 403-272-6665 ext. 7088
