Letter of Intent
Since I was young, I was in difficult situations because of our family problems, despite the stress and lack of
support I was able to focus on my studies and I passed my baccalaureate with an excellent average of 80.75
percent. After that I was inspired by the journey of my brother who made me discover the field of hydraulics and
I got my master's degree in hydraulics in 2020 at the university of Bejaia. During my university education I took
courses in hydrological modeling and optimization of hydro systems and I did a mini project on the theme "the
function of rain-flow transfer" all this experience made me discover that this specialty is very broad. That's how I
decided to develop my basic knowledge and to apply for a master in hydraulics in your university. In my
opinion, traveling is one of the most effective ways to immerse yourself in a new culture, a new language and a
new way of life and thinking. This type of experience truly allows individuals to learn to deal with a reality that is
not their own and at the same time to open up to the world. From the little research that I have done on you
cities and universities, I believe that this host institution will allow me to achieve my goals in this experience.
Finally, let me express that I am firmly determined to work hard and achieve the goals I have set for myself in
my life which is to be a research specialist in the specialty of hydrological modeling and then I aim to prepare
my PhD. so, this scholarship will be an opportunity for me to realize my dreams. I am waiting patiently for a
positive answer. Please accept my deepest appreciation and gratitude for your evaluation and consideration.
Please accept, Madam, Sir, the expression of my distinguished sentiments.
In this section, it is expected to explain following details: your academic and social experiences relating the field you want to take an education, your
reasons for choosing Turkey for study and the importance of your future plans for your education and scholarship in Turkey.
A hydrological model is a simplified representation of the watershed, allowing the simulation of hydrological
variables (typically river flow) from climatic observations (precipitation and temperature (precipitation and
temperature in particular). In order to describe the different phenomena at play in this territory, a triple
simplification on this territory, a triple simplification of the system is necessary (Perrin, 2000): - on the temporal
dimension, by modeling average flows on fixed time steps (e.g., the hour or the day) on the temporal
dimension, by modeling average flows on fixed time steps (e.g., the hour or the day), - on the spatial
dimension, by considering uniform climatic parameters and forcings, at the scale of the scale of pre-specified
spatial units, - in the description of the processes, to represent only the hydrological processes dominant at the
considered scales.
1- Subject of study
Which propagation function should be chosen to link the different grid cells of a hydrological model semi-
distributed model ?
2- Research Question (Up to 15 words)
A hydrological model is a simplified representation of the watershed, allowing the simulation of hydrological
variables (typically river flow) from climatic observations (precipitation and temperature (precipitation and
temperature in particular). In order to describe the different phenomena at play in this territory, a triple
simplification on this territory, a triple simplification of the system is necessary (Perrin, 2000): - on the temporal
dimension, by modeling average flows on fixed time steps (e.g., the hour or the day) on the temporal

dimension, by considering uniform climatic parameters and forcings, at the scale of the scale of pre-specified
spatial units, - in the description of the processes, to represent only the hydrological processes dominant at the
considered scales. In this project, we propose to focus on the spatial dimension. With the increasing availability
of spatialized information at the basin scale (precipitation, physical characteristics), the division of the
watershed into finer sub-units becomes more accessible, which allows to take into account more explicitly the
variabilities within the basin. Semi-distribution consists in dividing the basin of interest into sub-basins and then
applying a rainfall-runoff model to each of these entities. The output hydrographs are then linked by a hydraulic
The output hydrographs are then linked by a hydraulic transfer scheme that allows them to be propagated
downstream within the hydrographic network, in order to obtain a flow at the outlet of the basin of interest
(Lobligeois 2014). However, there are many propagation functions (kinematic wave, Muskingum, reservoirs,
simple delay, etc.), which raises the question of choosing the most suitable function.
3- Analysis of the Problem (at least 75, maximum 300 words)(In this section, briefly describe the topic and your theory (concept map) to be used in
the study.)
The approach will be implemented with the GRSD model running at hourly time step. The approach will be
tested on a set of basins with high spatial variability of rainfall. The method used will be as follows: -
Bibliography of different simple propagations functions. - Handling of tools and database - Implementation of
propagations functions - Tests and results analysis
4- Research Method (minimum 50 maximum 300 words)"(Give information about the academic research methods you intend to use in this study. For
example, in-depth interviews, observations, surveys, experiments, etc.) For example, in-depth interviews, observations, surveys, experiments, etc.)
Research shows that hydrological models have very different designs (from very simplified conceptual and
spatial representations, to more complex structures that can represent runoff generation mechanisms).
Therefore, they do not require the same input data and do not have the same parameters.
5- Preliminary Answer to the Research Question (at least 75, maximum 300 words)
1) Test and compare different simple propagation functions. The efficiency of the different functions will be
quantified in relation to the simulation of downstream flows. 2) Propose and carry out sensitivity studies. The
behavior of these functions during periods of high or low water could be analyzed for example. 3) Investigate
the impact on the hydrologic contribution of the intermediate basin. An improvement in the transfer function
may have a limited impact on downstream performance but can play an important role in understanding the
model, particularly in avoiding compensation via lateral inflows.
6- Academic Contribution of the Study (minimum 75, maximum 300 words) (Explain how this study will contribute to your academic field.)
