Application Architecture

Introduction
Riordan Manufacturing is in the process of creating a new HR information system known as HR-Web. Now that the HR-Web scope and other basic requirements have been discussed, the next step is determining the application and system architecture. This includes determining security controls, data entry processes, interfaces, and the network. The main objective of implementing HR-Web is to allow Riordan HR employees to do their jobs more effectively as well as assure all employees their information is safe and secure.

Application Overview
The entire HR-Web system will be Web-based. All software will be hosted on Riordan's secure Linux server located at their headquarters. There will be two distinct sections of this system, the HR employee section and the general employee section. The HR employee section will be composed of various menus, resources and tools to do their job. The general employee section will show all of the employee's personal information as well as a means to update/edit that information.

Security
Security is a major concern regarding HR-Web. It is essential each employee is able to view his or her information and at the same time, that info be secure and protected from getting into the wrong hands. HR employees must also be able to access their section with the same security measures put in place. HR-Web will utilize 128-bit encryption on all of its Web pages. This will insure hackers will not be able to penetrate the system (20 Linux, 2004). Each employee will be assigned a

Application Architecture username and initial password. The password must be changed every 3 months to remain secure. Furthermore, the password must contain at least 8 alphanumeric characters. Numbers and letters must be used. Finally, HR-Web will be extended using FTPS to insure maximum security.

System Architecture
The system architecture of HR-Web will remain very simplistic and easy will be easy to navigate through. All data will be transmitted over the internet between the secure server and the user's computer or mobile device. Below is a flowchart of the HR-Web sections and pages.

Interface
The HR-Web homepage will simply display the Riordan logo and two login sections, the HR employee section and the general employee section. The general employee page will display

Application Architecture all of the employee's personal info including current address and phone number, PTO and vacation balance, etc. The employee can also update this information by clicking on the update section. A start ticket link will be on the employee page as well. On the start ticket page, employees will be able to submit vacation and PTO requests as well as complaints or other grievances. These tickets will then be sent to a designated HR employee. The HR section will be much more extensive. On the HR employee section page, there will be two menus tiled, employee information and employee requests. Under the employee info menu, personal info, vacation hours, pay rate, workers compensation info, tax exemptions, training records, and hire date links will be displayed. Upon clicking on those links, the HR employee will be able to view and edit any of this information. They will also be able to create new employees in the system. The employee requests page will list all of the current employee grievances or PTO and vacation requests. As an added feature, whenever an employee submits a ticket, the designated HR employee will be notified via email.

Network & Infrastructure

The entire HR-Web system will be internet-based. HR employee's computers will be linked via LAN connection. Of course since HR-Web is all over the internet, information will be shared between HR employees, and stored on the Linux server. The server will also include a mass shared folder that everyone in the company can view and add to. This folder will be useful for sharing documents and information amongst Riordan employees. As started above, the HRWeb website will utilize FTPS to ensure content security. It will be coded in PHP, HTML and CSS, and occasional JavaScript.

Conclusion
The new HR-Web system at Riordan will have a positive impact on every employee. Not only will it eliminate the redundancies of the current HR system, it will also make work a lot easier HR employees. Furthermore, HR matters will be more convenient for every employee. The simple system architecture will be easy to use while remaining secure. The ultimate goal of HR-Web is to allow Riordan HR employees to complete their daily processes more efficiently while also allowing all employees to experience a safe, secure, and convenient working environment.
